What happened? Where did she go wrong?

over exposure and really high expectations of her from her debut, she's not really gained that attention back ...to be fair its hard in the music world to stay relevant and always keeping attention we've seen big acts with poor sales before so.

Yeah but those acts usually have good single sales/chart positions

She's hitting it with her acting career (according to some). Did she spend too much time with that Crypt Keeper?

she should never have spent time with Madonna at all, esp after the shade,  Lady Gaga is stuck trying to do what MJ did recreate a moment, its not happening, didnt happen for him. Music is hit and miss now more than ever so its no surprise. I think most artists out today release an album to tour, if she wants to focus on performing and touring do that, but I wouldnt expect big numbers on music she's such a niche act.

I completely disagree. :umm:

She's being completely "un-Gaga" in fact she might as well have released this album as Stefani. I think her mistake in the past with Artpop was trying to recreate what she did with FM and BTW. I like that she is just making the music she wants to make. Whether anyone's here for it or not is the question. But it's nice to see no gimmicks or faux conceptual pomp this time and I hope she sticks with that.

well the gimmicks are lower yes, but the music to the casual listener still sounds like the old Lady Gaga, she might even be better doing an entire rock album

People got tired of the shenanigans, but also are completely uninterested in the new toned down version too. Plus the music isn't as good as it used to be. She was a fad/flash in the pan IMO

They playing her like a flash in the pan, its just when you ready to write her off she comes thru with a TV role that wins a GG, or an Oscar performance, or a SB National Anthem, she isnt going away easy. I loved the first album the music was hot, the visuals worked to drive that whole thing, but too much too soon can kill things, and I think she might have over exposed herself.

Female popstars this millennium have very short life spans.  Gaga was a phenomenon that had good stats for someone who debuted in 2009*.  It seems like with females, that they give you everything all at once and people get tired of them very quickly.  You can see it with Ariana..Meghan..etc. Beyoncé and Rihanna have managed to keep people interested even when they have lackluster album sales or single sales.  What Gaga managed to do in 2015 was reinvent herself after ARTPOP by performing on every award show, becoming an actress, and doing a jazz album with Tony Bennett.  Now, the "popstar" Gaga is fading, but she's still talented and has the SB to win people back(if that is what she wants).  What I'm happy about with certain female popstars is that now they are in a position to make the music they WANT(ANTI, LEMONADE) but it's not gonna connect with the persona that made them superstars. Katy Perry is probably gonna be in the same boat.  Britney had a strong album(it's better that Shitney Jean) but her star fizzled by 2011.  She won't have that same reception she had when she debuted. With the music industry in shambles with dying sales and streaming being that BITCH, you're gonna have to find that balance between artistic freedom but still having some commercial appeal(hey it's still a business--no matter what, people don't want their shit to FLOP).

Gaga has a specific issue separate from this analysis though

I think the difference between Gaga and Rihanna and Beyoncé is that Gaga came out and very quickly became THE popstar. She burned very bright very fast. VS Beyoncé and Rihanna who had a more gradual evolution and now we're seeing that payoff especially with Beyoncé who is the best she's ever been.
