Mr. Wonder
If you're gonna recognize her, recognize her with some thought and logic. Spare me that "at least she's there" bullshit.
TwistedElegance™
I'd also add that if these artists are listed in no particular order then the Top 10 shouldn't look half as accurate. It's like they took those 10 seriously and got bored with the rest. And if it's not by rank then perhaps do away with numbers altogether. TwistedElegance™
All of the following shade is complete ballsack, but I'm happy Janet made the list. Examiner's Top 10 Pop Songs Of The Past 20 Years Year: 1998 Peak chart position: #1 It's hard to believe that before Janet Jackson purposely flashed her boob at the Super Bowl in 2004, she was actually a well respected artist with many hits. "Together Again" saved Janet's album The Velvet Rope from becoming a complete flop. The previous single, "Got Till It's Gone," was received so poorly that her record label, Virgin, decided not to release it as a proper single. "Together Again" is a tribute from Jackson to friends who had recently passed away from AIDS. Originally written as a ballad, the track was re-arranged as a dance song. "Together Again" is Jackson's biggest international single, reaching the top five and top ten in several countries. It was also nominated for a Grammy Award in 1998. Janet Jackson would go on to have a few more hits after "Together Again." Most experts note that her Super Bowl performance in 2004 pretty much ended her career. These days, Janet Jackson is playing to very small audiences in venues that are smaller than high school gymnasiums. http://www.examiner.com/article/the-top-pop-songs-of-the-past-20-years-9-together-again-by-janet-jackson

Mr. Wonder
This is old, but WTH: Janet Jackson Signs Lucrative Contract Janet Jackson has signed what is believed to be the most lucrative contract in the history of recording. The 24-year-old singer, songwriter and actress signed an exclusive contract with Virgin Records it was announced yesterday. Although the financial terms were not disclosed, the deal has been widely reported as yielding Ms. Jackson from $40 million and $50 million for three to five albums. The singer has made four solo albums for A&M Records, but only her last two, which were produced by the team of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, were blockbusters. "Control," released in 1986, sold more than five million copies in the United States. "Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation," released in 1989, recently passed the six million mark in sales in this country. Each has sold more than eight million copies worldwide. Ms. Jackson's record for the most lucrative contract is expected to be broken when her older brother Michael re-signs with Sony Records in an agreement that is reportedly close to being signed. http://www.nytimes.com/1991/03/12/arts/janet-jackson-signs-lucrative-contract.html Once upon a time Janet Jackson was known as Michael's kid sister — but her whopping new $40 million contract with Virgin Records suggests it may be time to think of Michael as one of Janet's brothers http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,313703,00.html
TwistedElegance™
Slant Magazine's Top 100 Singles Of The '80s 85. Janet Jackson, "The Pleasure Principle." The penultimate single from Janet Jackson's Control was the lowest-charting to that point, but has enjoyed arguably the longest shelf life. And its contradictory message to be aware of how pleasure can cloud your judgment—this against some of the hardest skittering beats in her back catalogue—is still converting people today, like me. A few years back, I protested the emerging consensus that "The Pleasure Principle" should be one of the songs we included on our 100 Greatest Dance Songs list. "I won't be happy with ['The Pleasure Principle'] as the song sounds like someone vomiting into my mouth and telling me I'm a fun-hatah for spitting it out," I emailed. Which only goes to show the dangers of giving into the short-term pleasure of snap judgments. 80. Janet Jackson, "What Have You Done for Me Lately." Nothing sends me into a trembling, corner-cowering stupor than a giggly, under-enunciated Janet Jackson jam. Something about this youngest Jackson has always felt frustratingly passive-aggressive. For better and for worse, even her most ostensibly empowered shows of self-expression suggest an act, and "What Have You Done for Me Lately" is no exception. The bouncy, jazzy caged heat of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis's spectacular production matches, beat for beat, the litany of gripes Miss Janet lobs at her lazy lover. I don't believe he's actually in the room with her as she skips sassily around the couch, but you understand that she's building control, and that she may actually put it into practice when he comes home. 65. Janet Jackson, "Rhythm Nation." Janet's socio-political tour de force opens with an inventory of samples and sounds, including her own "Nasty" and part of the bassline and horn section of Sly and the Family Stone's "Thank You (Fallettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)." But letting you be yourself wasn't on Janet and producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis's agenda. The song doesn't espouse personal freedom; it calls for social justice, with lyrics that promote the virtues of "strength in numbers" and calls for a generation to "come forth with me," or as Eric Henderson once put it, "unity through mandatory multiculturalism." Just as the costumes and sets for the accompanying music video were worryingly uniform, even oppressive, the music is militant and regimented, with beats that fire like artillery juxtaposed with the typically thin-voiced Janet's unbridled vocal performance. "Rhythm Nation" makes its statement without relying on schmaltz; it's no wonder why big brother Mike was envious of it. http://www.slantmagazine.com/music/feature/best-singles-of-the-1980s/321/page_1 They're updating each day, with the Top 40 still to come. Great start!
