Yaya DaCosta cast as Whitney Houston in Lifetime's biopic

(EW) -- Tyra taught her to smize, but will Yaya sing too?

TVLine reports that Yaya DaCosta, who made her television debut in Cycle 3 of "America's Next Top Model," has been cast to play Whitney Houston in Lifetime's upcoming biopic.

The Brown graduate (as she frequently reminded us on the show) has made a name for herself since taking second place in the modeling competition, nabbing acting roles in "All My Children," "Ugly Betty," "House" and even "Lee Daniel's The Butler."

Which contestant has had the most successful post-'ANTM' career?

Lifetime previously announced that Oscar winner Angela Bassett (who appeared most recently in "American Horror Story") will direct the film about the pop star, who died two years ago at 48.

Lifetime's project will focus on Houston's tumultuous relationship with the model, singer, and songwriter Bobby Brown, which continued throughout much of her career. "Whitney Houston" (working title) marks Bassett's first directorial debut and is scheduled to premiere in 2015.

Basset co-starred with Houston in 1995′s "Waiting to Exhale," making this something of a personal project for the actress. In a previous statement, Basset noted, "I have such regard for both Whitney's and Bobby's amazing talents and accomplishments; and I feel a responsibility in the telling of their story. Their humanity and bond fascinates us all. I'm beyond excited to have this opportunity to go behind the camera and into their world."

I LOVE IT, and I LOVE YAYA, loved her since she came in 2nd on Top Model season 3. And I kinew when she did The Butler her film career would be kicked up a notch, and Physically I see it, I mean they sure arent twins , but it's not a stretch either, same face shape, head shape, size, both sported big hair (tho yaya's is all hers), shes the right tone, and a native New Yorker. It's a perfect match for me.

Oh yea don't get me wrong I still HATE that it'll be Lifetime, but that's not changing, and having Yaya (who I deem as perfect) makes me feel better about it.

It should at the VERY least be HBO tho, I mean Whitney's life was NOT PG-13, I want cussing I want rawness, this is Whitney & Bobby

I didn't know she was an actress now. Did the modeling not work put?

She did good and had steady work but she was more concerned about acting than Modeling, I think she kinda retired from it & focused more on other things

She did all that and she's still not known outside of Top Model and/or the ppl who follow her? Sumtin ain't right with her team

This Lifetime movie won't help either :umm:

It is kinda shady to put her on Lifetime tho.. No lie

Well yea, sadly this could be to her what Selena was to J.Lo, and even that was a theatrical hit (that yielded a Golden Globe nom for best actress and for better or worst got her a entire career as a leading lady in a movie) But with Lifetime..............I don't even think they get Emmy's....or Emmy nominations. Just like that Betty & Corretta movie would've seen much more notice and gotten much more praise had it been on HBO instead of Lifetime. If Ms. Yaya SLAYS everloving life and brings the A game it will kinda be a waste with this movie sadly.

As somone who's in the last 2 years seen a few Lifetime movies (thanks to actresses & actors I like making them), no matter how good a Lifetime movie is, and some are great, it's still a Lifetime movie and isn't worth taking serious.........Angela should know better, & should've learned that fromm Betty & Corretta

Bravo :shifty:

Thanks for reminding us Lifetime isn't the worst network to do this movie (if Bravo did biopics ofcourse)

It'll be a' reality biopic' -_-

How are the Whitney stans taking this? They must be kinda upset. I mean, her legacy... Millions of records sold.. Reduced to a Straight to TV show

What are they gonna do for Janet :umm:

Whitney stans HATE EVERY BIT OF NEWS ABOUT THIS, they arent here for Yaya, they arent here for Angela directing, & most definitely they aren't here for Lifetime. But they aren't here for Bobbi Kristina playing her (like the family wants). That shouldn't happen.

I hope that's YEARRRRRRRRRS from now, I can't think of a actress who has the look & the moves to pull her off, cause any singing diva is easy, you just lip sync to the recording, Janet is another story you gotta not just be able to dance you gotta be able to SLAY!

She certainly resembles her.

yea but how's her lip syncing? Cause aint no way in hell they gonna find a chick that looks like Whitney and can blow as hard as she could.....it's gonna be tough to hear that voice attached to any face but Whitney......

I knew from jump they couldn't get anyone whose real voice they could use I mean come on it's Whitney, that's a 1 of a kind voice, even if you can SANNNNG don't mean you can sound like Whitney. Yaya will be taught to lipsync like any other actor in a biopic, cause with any/most movies that involve music it's singing on track anyway (know that 1st hand from Sparkle, Tho Jordan did do 2 takes of her big ballad at the end live). For me the resemblance and manerisms are the most important things of any biopic

I agree, but if we must settle for Lifetime, can they kick this thing up a notch or two above the TLC biopic ? >_< Whitney soooooo deserves better, she's an Icon...I sometimes wonder if Angela is tight for money, cause as a Black actress/entertainer as talented as she is, I would think she would want to see Whitney's talent held with a regard equal to the Icon....sadly maybe the only way to green light a Whitney biopic is through this outlet, which seems strange because I would think if written and produced well with the right marketing to all those that loved Whitney, that movie would slay "Dreamgirls" style -_- but alas this is some bullshit in death as in life I suppose :coffee:
