The Exclusive Discussion Thread: The Christmas Creep

The Christmas Creep is being describe by some as Christmas coming earlier and earlier; Creeping further and further up the calendar.

With millions (of Americans) working Thanksgiving Day, is this hurting us or helping us?

Will the Christmas Creep go further into November in the short future?

When do you start the countdown to Christmas?

Is it freewill or are retailers pressuring the consumers?

What's your thoughts on this cultural phenomenon?

I say it's hurting us since most Americans are already working themselves to the bone the rest of the year so to take another holiday away is unbearable. Not to mention the holidays are one of the few times families are able to bond so it'll hit home in a terrible way.

It likely will, unfortunately. It already seems like the Christmas season begins November 1st/the Day after Halloween.

I always start the Monday after Thanksgiving since that's the day I've always had to return to school and I'd be counting down until I'm out for a holiday again.

I think it's both retailers and consumers contributing to the problem. Consumers want their shit earlier and will nearly orgasm at the first sign of a good deal. Retailers want to rake in the money so they keep putting incentives out there for people to buy.

I've largely learned to accept it since I don't see it changing anytime soon, and likely never. It's disappointing, but it's rapidly becoming the norm so it'll take a hell of a lot to reverse if it ever does.

The Christmas Creep terminology alone speaks volumes about the phenomenon.  I think we can all agree it is becoming increasingly a season driven by consumer indulgent spending, and a time retailers and other companies see huge economic activity and volume. I don't even think the term "Black Friday" should exist, for some companies they earn well throughout the year the end of the year is simply a fat bonus check time for those that earn high incomes, read Wall Street. :filenails:

I believe what makes us Americans is that spirit that understands the core values we have in common. That's when we shine our best, I sadly think many of us are foregoing those values for consumption of material goods and thus makes us more shallow people. It helps the economy and creates jobs, even if only seasonal, but the truth is this does erode  at our core ethic of what it is to be American. And we are working ourselves to the bone, question is why? For what? After all the expensive shit I have seen and spent money on I find that money is only a tool, it doesn't give you happiness nor fulfillment in life. I don't think people bond that much over the holidays, I find that the gathering of families that for whatever reason dont spend time together on a somewhat regular basis tend to be dysfunctional and thus their holidays suck anyway, spending time with folks that get on yo nerves, Im actually relieved after the holidays are gone, I find them to be a time that taxes my energy and I just want things back to "normal"

There is every indication that this Christmas Creep does in fact seem to hit hard quickly following Halloween as Reyna said, it seems as if retailers only so many holidays to stuff their crap down our throats.. The good news is we all still have choice, just because people engage in mass hysteria like behavior to feel "normal" doesnt mean we all have to be sheep. In short you can say I want no parts of this and simply chose not to.
