Nicki Minaj: The Pinkprint - The Track-by-Track Review

Rock & Roll Hall of Game

Recommended Posts

After releasing quite a number of singles through 2014, months of unknown, and one push back, The Pinkprint has arrived and it is FIYAH. The Pinkprint is 16-tracks deep and well worth the price of admission. BONUS: I will review the 6 bonus tracks that comes with the iTunes and Target/UK deluxe album.

  1. All Things Go - A favorite among most, the first track is a 5 minute long ode to her career and personal life. Ms. Minaj described this track as the "deepest song on the album" and boy, she did not disappoint. 7/10

  2. I Lied - No lies told: BEST SONG ON THE ALBUM. The chorus will have you weeping and lying to all your exes. Nicki's vocals are beautifully displayed on this track. "Miss the way we kiss, Miss the D doe"  9.5/10

  3. The Crying Game - The instrumentals are lovable and infectious. The song sounds like something Toni Braxton should be featured in if she was relevant. Song is about a relationship on the brink of separation. Nicki really displays her versatility on this track. 8/10

  4. Get On Your Knees feat. Ariana Grande - An intimate song preaching to her partner to get on his knees. The chorus, sung by Mariah Carey's replacement, kills the momentum this song could have had. 6/10

  5. Feeling Myself feat. Beyoncé - My God! Why wasn't this single is beyond insane! This song is amazing. From the chorus to the verse. Bey only has three choruses and two hot [short] verses. This song has an infectious chorus. instrumental, and lyrics. It's one of the songs you'll actually keep in your collection for years to come. 9/10 (NEEDS MORE BEYONCE)

  6. Only feat. Drake, Lil' Wayne, & Chris Brown - We all know this song. It's a grower with Drake and Wayne stealing the show with their smooth flows. Chris Brown was not needed. 8/10

  7. Want Some More - This song is a car bopper with a male vocalist leading the deadly-memoriable chorus. Nicki doesn't disappoint on the verses. 8.5/10

  8. Four Door Aventador - This song isn't that as memorable as the 7 previous but the female vocal chorus is kinda hot. Sounds kind of dated. Definitely something worth skipping. 6.5/10

  9. Favorite feat. Jeremih - This song is pretty good album track but it won't be your 'favorite'. Jeremih vocals are amazing on this song but it's nothing to write home about. 7.5/10

  10. Buy a Heart feat. Meek Mill - This song has a lot of potential. Meek Mill isn't one of the popular rappers but he does a great job carrying this song. He featured in the chorus and has the initial verse of the song. The song is about the uncertainly about love. 7/10

  11. Trini Dem Girls feat. Lunchmoney Lewis - Nicki reminds you she's from Islands on this track. I feel like Rihanna should be featured on this track. It is her type of song to shine on. 6.5/10

  12. Anaconda - We all know this song. It's catchy and garnered Nicki a Top 3 hit pushing 1.2 million singles in the US. 8/10

  13. The Night Is Still Young - A song with a great title but the execution was off. It's a pre-party anthem. This is def' a grower but not a show-er. 7/10

  14. Pills N Potions - This song still goes hard. This song is the first single, released in May 2014 and reached #24 on Billboard Hot 100. One of her most underrated singles. 9/10

  15. Bed of Lies feat. Skylar Grey - Released in November 2014, Bed is Pinkprint's fourth single and one of the better choices. The song is deep and beautiful. Skylar Grey is amazing period. 9/10

  16. Grand Piano - This song has a lot of potential/growing power. Accompanied by a piano and some other soft instruments. Nicki Minaj's version of a ballad (I suppose). Keep listening to this song and I'm sure this will be a fan favorite. 7/10

  17. Big Daddy feat. Meek Mill - Meek Mill makes an appearance on the deluxe version with this song but it's definitely a miss. This missed the main track listing for a reason. 6/10

  18. Shanghai - Thought this song would have some kind of meaning or something. The instrumentals is very "Asian" but, again, this song missed the main track listing for a reason. 6/10

  19. Win Again - Nicki Minaj HAS to have a diss track for her critics, haters, and copy cats. Favorite line: "They want me to come and help em but I am not a magician" and "Don't write their raps plus they flow shitty (Mr. Iggy). The flow of vocals on her bridge is worth giving this song a chance. 7.5/10

  20. Mona Lisa -  Target shoppers and the Brits have the pleasure of having this song on their deluxe version. Unfortunately, the song is meh and forgettable. 5/10

  21. Put You in a Room - It's about an exclusive friend-with-benefit who has to go afterwards because, as Nicki puts it, "but you can't sleep with me." This song has potential that the UK and Target shoppers will enjoy in the long run. 7/10

  22. Truffle Butter feat. Drake & Lil Wayne - Drake introduces the track with a hot verse (as always), followed by Nicki and Lil Wayne closes. This instrumental and chorus are really funky and an ode to the 90s. iTunes shoppers will enjoy this song later down the line. 8/10

FINAL GRADE - C (74%) - The Pinkprint's deluxe tracks brought the percentage down 3% but it's still a solid album that was worth the wait. Is it her best album? No, but it will not be even considered her worst. The album has highs and lows but overall, Nicki delivered and has proven why she is considered one of the best rappers in the game.

Who had Kanye saying "She a problem"?
Who the fuck came in the game made her own cologne?
Who made Lil Wayne give em five million?

PS - There's a new bonus track out call Warmables. Not heard it yet

Is the lack of a success and the crap single choices down to the problems at Cash Money?

I hope there's a remix to Feelin' Myself because although I like it, it pisses me off that the moment the chorus start's building up there's a drop in momentum :(

This album is so good. I can't stop listening to it.

okay I gave it a listen today at work, the perfect place for me to hear an entire new album. I think for me it's a grower, some tracks stand out and are good, it's a lot more laid back than I would like, but her vibe is good. Love "Truffle Butter" , "Pills and Potions", "Bed of Lies", "The Crying Game", "The Night is Still Young" .....I love the lyrics to what she has to say when she's making a substantial statement. Overall I would say this is an unexpected less crazy and more grounded Nicki. I too think Nicki appears to not stand out as anything more than a feature artist on her own album. there's a lot of Drake. Grande, and Lil Wayne

The end of "Grand Piano" took me a second to recognize the violin, and I remembered it's Paula Abdul's 1991 hit song "Rush Rush" and I like it :filenails:

I personally don't think Feelin Myself is that great of a song - quality wise.  It's cute to dance to or whatever but there's much better songs to remix.  I don't necessarily think that it is a display of the problems at Cash Money because Cash Money at the end of the day is just an arm of the very successful Universal.  The problem with this roll-out is that they chose single choices to curry the favor of the Starships or Fancy fan base and none of the songs that they though would be able to do this - did, because unlike Starships and Fancy, her pop songs this go around were too sad for teenager girls to get behind and propel.

Instead, they should've went with a more hip-hop based approach to solidify that fan base and hope for some cross over success with songs like Feeling Myself and the song with Ariana Grande.
