Why do you think...?

As Im sitting here watching, revisiting TVR tour ...it struck me how huge this tour was for her careerwise. It seemed to be her most notable tour despite it not being her highest grossing tour and/or longest running.

What do you think it was at that moment, that time period? What made that tour such a pivotal point it her career? Was it because she was in rear form? Was it because it was the first tour she did that was released to be purchased? What made non fans take notice of Janet and pay respect? Non fans talk more about that tour than an of her others..What made it connect with ppl on a much higher level than say..the RN or Janet tour, etc? What do you think ?

The VR tour was following her release of the album of the same name, unfortunately the lead single GTIG didn't do so well, and the talk was going not so good, like I remember the radio said her album sales were picking up with the release of TA....after the album became more of a success, I think the next step was the tour, John Norris interviewed her and asked about a Rolling Stone piece saying her concert sales were not going well....the tour proved to be a success, the album was a success.....in this era Janet had naysayers ready to write her off, and she got out there and proved she had staying power that she was still very much in the game. Janet earned respect, plus the album wasn't this pop driven album she went places on TVR album she hadnt before.....the depression, was it a gimmick? would this work? would that not go over well? all those questions came up and she kept going

The HBO thing definitely help. Like I remember being a little boy like long before I knew who a Janet Jackson really was or ANYTHING about what was on the Velvet Rope album and seeing that promo'd on HBO so much that I use to play on my skates outside and say I was performing The Velvet Rope.  :w00t:

But I also think in terms of production and things like that - it was so next level.  It really set the ground for future female entertainers. Also for a lot of people it was the first time really seeing someone bring up an audience member and be sexually suggestive with them which is now a common theme among concert shows.  So I think for it's groundbreaking and award winning nature -- it is a favorite among both fans and non-fans alike

I remember being 12 years old in 1998 and crying and begging my parents to stay up to watch that concert. I had seen the commercials for weeks and I thought my ass could sway them into letting me stay up to watch the whole thing by crying. lol!Needless to say I only watched the first half and was sent to bed weeping. But I eventually got to watch the rest of it because HBO played the hell out of it. I had my mom tape it. And in 2004 I brought the DVD.

um Im glad you guys and gals saw the concert I watch it on dvd as one of my favorites actually I was at the show though! I saw her perform live, twice on this tour. I met Rene, he told my friend and I about the show, how it was like a play in three acts, he told us it was he birthday the day before, July 16th or something, because my best friend's birthday was the 18th. Aretha Franklin came out to see the show, she had guards escort her big self into something like a 5th row seat, but she was there honey :filenails:

my favorite moment in the show for me live, was her standing there still for minutes between songs, and a bead of sweat rolls down her forehead, I literally went crazy at that moment, the crowd went crazy, like thats Janet Jackson up there :w00t:
