Fraternity members shut down after racist chant goes viral...update the apology video

Two frat brothers are now expelled from the University of Oklahoma after a 10 second video showing two members chanting the N word. The video was sent anonymously to a Black student at the school and it quickly got ugly. I must say the fact these students got kicked out serves them right. The reaction has been swift since the video leaked Sunday night.... THE VIDEO BELOW IS NOT CENSORED

Is this what white people do in their spare time? I mean they couldn't think of anything else to do? All the time in the world and they choose to think about black people and sing a racist song? It's actually laughable and pathetic. Nothing but ignorant humans

This is why I challenged the notion with a couple of my coworkers about how they felt Millennials didn't have a lot of racism.  These types of beliefs and attitudes are learned from a young age and passed down generation to generation.  If you procreate and have racist attitudes, your children learn them.  It's a systemic issue as these young men will probably go on to have prominent roles in society and have the power structure behind them to enforce their racist ideals while hiding behind the shield of White Privilege and White Supremacy.  I'm not even surprised by this, but I am saddened.

The whole idea behind frats is exclusivity, and I must say I think the race issues in this country are actually getting worst. Whatever progress we made through middle class working jobs that are no longer widely available has turned the clocks back. I think its mind boggling in 2015 we are still facing some of the most dire issues in this country, but I digress racism is in the fabric of American society, that rant wasn't about not letting women in, not about not letting gays in, it was about that same ole same ole BLACK FOLK.....and as a Black man I get tired of this shit, Im just grateful technology can put two idiots on blast in a matter of 2 days, where was this when we needed it in the Duke Lacrosse case? They lawyered the fuck up, them white boys did.

Millennials actually can be even worst, they're even further detached from the civil rights struggle...I wouldn't let my co-workers argue that either, we have a clear cut case of idiocy on tape.

Good. Getting expelled will be the least of their worries soon. I agree these attitudes are fed down and sadly that generational gap isn't as wide as you'd hope.

We had a young woman so mad President Obama won re-election she used the N word on FB, she got fired from her job....there is at least some accountability, no matter how much the other issues suck, and they do, the overall message being sent is this is not acceptable, this is not good for the country and who we are.

Millennials Are More Racist Than They Think

The next generation of Americans, they say, is “post-racial.”Unfortunately, closer examination of the data suggests that millennials aren’t racially tolerant, they’re racially apathetic: They simply ignore structural racism rather than try to fix it.

The study found that young whites have the same level of racial stereotypes as their parents.

There is reason for an even deeper worry: The possibility that the veneer of post-racial America will lead to more segregation.

In a study using American National Election Studies—a survey of Americans before and after each presidential election—Vincent Hutchings finds, “younger cohorts of Whites are no more racially liberal in 2008 than they were in 1988.” My own analysis of the most recent data reveals a similar pattern: Gaps between young whites and old whites on support for programs that aim to further racial equality are very small compared to the gaps between young whites and young blacks.

Numerous studies find that the election of President Barack Obama has made whites, particularly young whites, sanguine about racial disparities in America. One study surveyed 509 people of all races before and after the 2008 election about their perceptions of discrimination against blacks. The youngest third in the sample were 11.7 percent less likely to perceive discrimination in the wake of Obama’s election than they were before, while the oldest third was 8.5 percent less likely.

In the recent MTV study cited above, 62 percent of millennials (58 percent of people of color, 64 percent of whites) agreed that “having a Black President demonstrates that racial minority groups have the same opportunities as white people.”

Only 39 percent of white millennials believe “white people have more opportunities today than racial minority groups.” By contrast, 65 percent of people of color feel that whites have differential access to jobs and other opportunities.

Millennials have grown up with the internet, I don't think they can imagine a time without it. Problem with the internet is people can hide behind a screen and post whatever they want no filter needed, this has added to the problem. People speak whatever they think no consideration of the consequences. Of course they believe its their right, this generation is the most self serving entitled bunch ever! They really believe we live in a post-racial world, and no the fuck we dont :umm:

IMO, Actions speak louder than words, especially in this instance. It's one thing to comment on some random video saying stupid shit, but to hurt someone because of their race.. It's petty

Radical hate groups are on a decline in this nation and have been for a while.. To paraphrase President Obama,  Changes have been made over the past 100 years but more changes need to come.

Unfortunately, there will also be a group of people who dislike another race.

Excellent article.  Thank you for posting.  And it's true.  There may be less hate groups, but there are other ways to manifest your racism.  It is not socially acceptable to be an overt racist, but covert racism is alive and well and it affects people.  I've spent years in recruiting, and it is shocking some of the attitudes, stereotypes, and biases managers have on applicants and it directly colors their view on who gets the job.  You don't have to use a racial epithet to have that feeling in your heart. Coded language is real and actions are real.  We forget that a lot of millennials were raised by Baby Boomers.  Those statistics are sad. Millennials are the most diverse generation in the history of the US, and yet they aren't as progressive as you may think.  That is why we're seeing such a resurgence in people fighting for their agency and respect, and I love that and am so appreciative of people taking a stand whether they are part of the affected group or they are an ally and are not afraid to use their privilege to help break down barriers.

That was an interesting read Bu. The problem I see is young whites want a leg up however they can. As your article said, the biggest crime of all is their apathetic views. Im very passionate about affirmative action, I once asked a white male that was a law student at University of Michigan what he thought about affirmative action, I wanted insight, I still remember him saying "it doesn't affect me on a day to day basis" ...in the moment I realized when you're part of the dominant hierarchy it simply isn't your concern about the plights of others not like you, privileged. -_-

White millennials have a vested interest in maintaining the status quo, its in their favor Im afraid.
