One Direction's Zayn Malik Officially Leaves Group

Zayn Malik has officially left One Direction. The band made the announcement on their Facebook account on March 25, one week after he made headlines for leaving their current tour due to "stress."

The band notes they will continue on as a "four-piece."

You can read the full statements, including a statement from Malik, below.

"After five incredible years Zayn Malik has decided to leave One Direction. Niall, Harry, Liam and Louis will continue as a four-piece and look forward to the forthcoming concerts of their world tour and recording their fifth album, due to be released later this year."

Zayn added, "My life with One Direction has been more than I could ever have imagined. But, after five years, I feel like it is now the right time for me to leave the band. I'd like to apologise to the fans if I've let anyone down, but I have to do what feels right in my heart. I am leaving because I want to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight. I know I have four friends for life in Louis, Liam, Harry and Niall. I know they will continue to be the best band in the world."

One Direction released their own statement: "We're really sad to see Zayn go, but we totallyrespect his decision and send him all our love for the future. The past five years have been beyond amazing, we've gone through so much together, so we will always be friends. The four of us will now continue. We're looking forward to recording the new album and seeing all the fans on the next stage of the world tour."

As did Simon Cowell, who discovered the band on X Factor UK. "I would like to say thank you to Zayn for everything he has done for One Direction," he said in a statement. "Since I first met Zayn in 2010, I have grown very, very fond - and immensely proud - of him. I have seen him grow in confidence and I am truly sorry to see him leave. As for One Direction, fans can rest assured that Niall, Liam, Harry and Louis are hugely excited about the future of the band."

I know we have a few 1D fans in the group so wanted to know your thoughts. Personally tho I don't consider myself a fan I must say they do have good music and are at least talented. But I don't know them well enough to really know of his importance, so I ask the fans here, is this like The Spice Girls losing Ginger in that he was a focal piece of the image and it can end up hurting their popularity, basically do you think this'll matter for them or will this have a impact on them?

To me at least 1 D fans had him for 4 albums. I tell you right now I wish Ging waited until album #5 before leaving, ugh #DontEvenGetMeStarted :filenails:

I think it could be the beginning of the end. All of them look beat as fuck because they've been overworked by the label.

Their popularity in terms of sales has slowly been dwindling yet their tour stats are impressive. I'm not sure.

All groups have a shelf life. Especially manufactured ones.

I think Geri got a little carried away leaving when she did but she did have a few local hits at first.

Geri had said that the group got too big too fast.  She craved the fame way more than the other girls.  Granted, the other girls wanted the fame too, but Geri "needed" it more.  Even after she left, she kinda turned looney just to stay in the spotlight.

She was the leader in the beginning, but once the girls became global, each member started to gain their confidence as businesswomen/artists and Geri said herself that she felt they didn't need her any more.

Zayn wasn't the leader of the group and I don't think he craved the spotlight the way Geri did.  Geri still wanted to be in the spotlight and Zayn wants to just go away.

I think Harry is the Ginger one of the group.  Meaning he is the focal point of the group as Geri was.

Nope. Never heard one. I don't listen to pop radio and I haven't actively sought out their music.

You're right. I just don't care. lol

I'm pretty sure you have unless you live in a cave in the middle of whatever-part-of American You're from... which, nowadays, is possible :coffee:

This is a crowning moment in pop culture.. yet I still don't care

I don't know if this is what Vaquero meant but Geri was the focal point of the image of The Spice Girls, tho she definitely is the least talented (which I don't know if that applies with Harry & 1 direction, like from what I hear he's also the most talented), but Harry definitely is in terms of looks the way Ginger was.

I wasn't referring talent wise

but popularity

Geri was the most popular one of the group

and from what I have seen, Harry is the most popular one from One Direction

When  Geri left, it was the downfall of the Spice Girls.  With Zayn leaving, its hard to say how the rest of their tour and their albums will sell

I know, I was just pointing out that talent wise she was in 5th place, but yea in terms of their image & popularity she was likely the 1st 1 you thought of, she & MelB were the most outspoken and had the most recognizable consistent look, but more so her, she always seemed to stand out the most in the best of ways for the group. So losing her did alot of damage, more than I think even they can admit even today (judging by their interviews & documentary's talking about that time period).

I always thought Posh was the most popular one, especially when David came on the scene. Apart from that iconic Brits dress, Geri didn't offer much.

I feel like Posh's popularity grew only because of him, like all I know is from my expeiences as a lil fan back in the day, Posh was the 1 I always forgot, with saying her names she always came last, and she was the most reserved & standoff-ish compared to the others, like I 100% with all my honest heart believe if she had left and Geri stayed, nobody would've cared, and they would've went on to more success (well they also needed a better 3rd album that that forgetable filler filled mess). Like I said above in terms of the talent Victoria is actually way more valuable than Geri & I say Emma, but in interviews, & videos & performances Geri was the ham, she loved the camera & the camera loved her no matter what she was doing, she was all out, besides her fashion.
