Janet Jackson
"No Sleeep"
Rhythm Nation

After a seven-year hiatus, Janet Jackson returns to her Velvet Rope-era neo-soul sound for "No Sleeep," helmed by her old collaborators Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Her soft, sensual vocals are refreshing in a world of robotic Auto-Tune, but she feels too restrained, doing little to up the midnight-storm beat. -- Steven J. Horovitz

"No Sleeep", with its languid downtempo slink, offers a similar sensuality; her delivery is husky, understated, coyly discreet, refraining from those moments of falsetto. But in attitude, it's miles away from stuff like "Empty". Toying with the imagined details of a weekend spent "doing whatever" (wink), Jackson exudes a calm, confident glow—the self-possessed freedom Velvet Rope Jackson only imagined. It's a study in grace, and the ultimate expression of summer lust: you can feel the humidity in your hair, the sweaty sheets, and the relief as Jackson’s quiet storm becomes literal as a summer rain.

when I hear No Sleep, neo soul and Velvet Rope does not come to mind. Its pure R&B and I feel it actually would fit well on Damita Jo..next to 'Truly'.  Billboard does have some valid points about it doesn't add anything to genre that it falls in, its a very modest return to music. I think fans get caught up in the fact that its a new Janet Jackson song, but its really a simple song with Janet's vocal as the main attraction and that's why I LOVE IT!!! So fuck them.

She returned as Janet!  She didn't return and give us something that is trending for the moment.  This is the most important detail that critics need to realize about "No Sleeep"......it truly is classic and gives Janet's fans and non fans alike a throwback to what is genuinely Janet; a sultry voice that is both angelic and sensual and just makes you want to groove whether the beat is mid-tempo or up.

They ALWAYS do :sigh: and she did the last nite but look what happen. Feedback got cheated...it should have went wayyyy further than it did. The beat alone was smashing every other song during that.time

The lyrics were the issue with feedback.  Plus that era was just bad all around
