How the Republican health care bill fell apart

Washington (CNN)The Republicans' signature campaign promise to repeal and replace Obamacare came to a screeching halt Monday night after Sens. Mike Lee of Utah and Jerry Moran of Kansas came together, shocked Capitol Hill and vowed to vote against the latest draft of the GOP's health care bill.

"We should not put our stamp of approval on bad policy," Moran said in a bold statement that derailed Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's bid to overhaul the Affordable Care Act. McConnell could only lose two senators and still pass the bill, and Maine's Susan Collins and Kentucky's Rand Paul had already defected.
Across town, over rosemary-grilled rib eye and summer vegetable succotash at the White House, President Donald Trump and GOP leaders were attempting to convince a group of reliably conservative rank-and-filers to join with them and vote for the health care bill. But as they dined on lemon ricotta agnolotti with heirloom tomato ragout and the "farm stand peach cobbler," the Senate rebellion against the health care bill was well underway.

That's because Lee and Moran were working all day Monday on how they could announce their opposition together.
The goal was to avoid being the notorious and definitive third "no" vote, aides told CNN. If they announced together, Moran and Lee could share the heat. But also implicit in their joint opposition was a clear fact: They represented different, significant concerns with the bill. Their joint opposition served to provide cover for other on-the-fence colleagues who may soon join them in publicly opposing the GOP's effort at finally making good on its cornerstone campaign promise of the past seven years.
A Senate GOP aide with direct knowledge of the ongoing upheaval told CNN that Lee and Moran are likely just the first of many to announce publicly they oppose the bill.
"More senators are ready to jump," the aide said. "This wasn't done without that knowledge."

the same issues keep coming up with every version of a new bill, and that's people losing what they already have under AHCA, no senator wants to explain to their people why they have less coverage, and this is why these bills continue to fail. I still think a lot of Republicans may lose their seats

Im still waiting on the moment that breaks this administration, and maybe it wont be a single moment maybe it will be a slew of events that leave people scratching their heads over how things are going or not in some cases :coffee:

I filled out another DNC questionare they sent me on what policies and positions they should be focusing on.  And what are the most important things that should be on election platforms in 2018 and 2020.

They cannot fall into this run against Trump only thing.  Or speak too much on Russia.  Yeah Russia is important and there's a lot of shady shit.  But, it isn't that important to the voters they need to get back on their side. They need to focus on actual policy.  Republicans made a HUGE mistake obstructing Obama for 7 years then not being ready to govern when they did get control of everything.  Its not going to be "easy" to get control of Congress and the White House in the next 2 elections despite the obvious ineptitude of GOP.  Fox News etc is POWERFUL to the red states they follow it religiously, they watch Hannity etc like they are actual News people not opinion based Trump buttlickers.  Even with all the scandals and shit with Fox and how crazy their shows and comments look to us, their viewers are HARDCORE and it is still number 1 here.

Dems have to have actual REAL policies right off the bat to counter the do nothing GOP.  They cant make the same mistakes and have to expect GOP to not work with them obviously.  We also have internal divisions still on leadership and things like should we go all the way left and push for Single payer healthcare now like every other developed country?

Pence Breaks Tie as Senate Votes to Begin Debating Obamacare Repeal

WASHINGTON — The Senate narrowly voted on Tuesday to begin debate on a bill to repeal major provisions of the Affordable Care Act, taking a pivotal step forward after the dramatic return of Senator John McCain, who cast a crucial vote despite his diagnosis of brain cancer.

Vice President Mike Pence cast the tie-breaking vote.

The 51-50 vote came only a week after the Republican effort to dismantle a pillar of former President Barack Obama’s legacy appeared all but doomed. It marked an initial win for President Trump, who pushed, cajoled and threatened senators over the last days to at least begin debating the repeal of the health care law.

But even with that successful step, it is unclear whether Republicans will have the votes they need to uproot the law that has provided health insurance to millions of Americans. The Senate will now begin debating, amending and ultimately voting in the coming days on legislation that would have a profound impact on the American health care system.

Yes.  Right now all they are doing is talking trash about Trump.  Trump will self destruct on his own.  I dont think Trump will run in 2020 or be allowed to so the door is open for the Dems.  The really is no leadership right now and Nancy Pelosi and Schumer are not what they need moving forward.  They need younger and more diverse leaders speaking for them.  They need to make sure they are all on the same page including Bernie Sanders who keeps flip flopping from Dem to Independent.  We cannot have his supporters doing this suicide my way or the high way mess in 2020.

I like senator warren and I like senator harris.  I like the bill they wrote together regarding women in prison. It won't get passed under this administration though. and I like senator Al franken.   Those are the people that need to be talking.  They know how to talk shit without all the rehearsed statements and they are colorful.  That's what drew alot of people to Trump.  He was a spectacle.  As far as single payer at this point people need to focus on just making sure another republican in not in office in 2020.  I know Bernie's people want single payer but right now we are losing all our rights and single payer is just one issue.

The Dems have alot of young stars in congress and on the local levels.  Mayors, judges etc.  Its time to let them take the wheel

President Trump: Transgender People Can't Serve in U.S. Military in 'Any Capacity'

(WASHINGTON) — President Donald Trump says he will bar transgender individuals from serving "in any capacity" in the U.S. armed forces.

Trump said on Twitter Wednesday that after consulting with "Generals and military experts," that the government "will not accept or allow Transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military."

Trump added that "Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail."

Transgender service members have been able to serve openly in the military since last year, when former Defense Secretary Ash Carter ended the ban.

Military chiefs recently announced a delay on allowing transgender people from enlisting. But transgender troops are already serving openly in the military.

Any LGBTQ that votes Republican is a self hating idiot period.

A 70 year old man just kicked out Americans  serving this country.

Fucking shame

71 year old man-child, to be exact...

...the same man-child who was a multiple drafter dodger because of "bone spurs" in his heel ?

Inside Trump’s snap decision to ban transgender troops

A congressional fight over sex reassignment surgery threatened funding for his border wall.

After a week sparring with his attorney general and steaming over the Russia investigation consuming his agenda, President Donald Trump was closing in on an important win.

House Republicans were planning to pass a spending bill stacked with his campaign promises, including money to build his border wall with Mexico.

But an internal House Republican fight over transgender troops was threatening to blow up the bill. And House GOP insiders feared they might not have the votes to pass the legislation because defense hawks wanted a ban on Pentagon-funded sex reassignment operations — something GOP leaders wouldn’t give them.

They turned to Trump, who didn’t hesitate. In the flash of a tweet, he announced that transgender troops would be banned altogether.

Trump’s sudden decision was, in part, a last-ditch attempt to save a House proposal full of his campaign promises that was on the verge of defeat, numerous congressional and White House sources said.

The president had always planned to scale back President Barack Obama-era policies welcoming such individuals in combat and greenlighting the military to pay for their medical treatment plans. But a behind-the-scenes GOP brawl threatening to tank a Pentagon funding increase and wall construction hastened Trump’s decision.

Numerous House conservatives and defense hawks this week had threatened to derail their own legislation if it did not include a prohibition on Pentagon funding for gender reassignment surgeries, which they deem a waste of taxpayer money. But GOP leaders were caught in a pinch between those demands and moderate Republicans who felt the proposal was blatantly discriminatory.

“There are several members of the conference who feel this really needs to be addressed,” said senior House Appropriations Committee member Robert Aderholt (R-Ala.) on Tuesday. “This isn’t about the transgender issue; it’s about the taxpayer dollars going to pay for the surgery out of the defense budget."

That’s why House lawmakers took the matter to the Trump administration. And when Defense Secretary James Mattis refused to immediately upend the policy, they went straight to the White House. Trump — never one for political correctness — was all too happy to oblige.

“[P]lease be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow Transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military,” Trump tweeted Wednesday morning. "Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail.”

The president’s directive, of course, took the House issue a step beyond paying for gender reassignment surgery and other medical treatment. House Republicans were never debating expelling all transgender troops from the military.

"This is like someone told the White House to light a candle on the table and the WH set the whole table on fire,” said one senior House Republican aide. The source said that while GOP leaders asked the White House for help on the taxpayer matter specifically, they weren't expecting — and got no heads up on — Trump's far-reaching directive.

While Democrats and centrist Republicans are already blasting the move, one White House official said the decision would be "seen as common-sense" by millions — though likely vociferously protested by others.

"It's not the worst thing in the world to have this fight," the administration official said.

The announcement, multiple sources said, did not sit well with Mattis, who appeared to be trying to avoid the matter in recent weeks. An extensive Defense Department review of the policy was already underway, but a decision wasn't expected for months.

Insiders say Mattis felt there was no need to rush upending the policy, arguing the Pentagon needed time to study the issue. Their decision would affect at least 2,450 transgender active-military personnel, according to a Rand report — though military LGBT activist groups say as many as 15,000 soldiers fall into that category.

That timeline, however, wasn't good enough for House Republicans. Rep. Vicky Hartzler (R-Mo.), the original author of the House’s transgender proposal, tried numerous times to phone Mattis to discuss the transgender issue in recent weeks.

Politico

So it was all so he could get backing from the Evangelicals  for the fucking WALL.  Even though the Pentagon wanted more time to study how it would effect the thousands of transgender already in the service.

What works locally may not work nationally but it doesn't hurt to try

they don't have to push their local policies we just need to hear their voices. Winning the White House comes down to the electoral college so the Dems right now need to get their base in each state hyped up. Trump is going around having campaign rallies the Dems need to do the same.

It’s the Democrats’ fault for losing to Trump. Hillary should have spent more time in Blue states & Ohio and less time doing... idk.. emailing
