Isn’t promo (interviews, magazines, SNL) suppose to promote her album? While radio was a large entity to get music out, So was television which Janet was all over

Y’all talking but ain’t giving sources. How did they affect her writing/producing, single choices, etc

It helps but radio and tv is like 95% of promotion. If they don't play the music, you're not getting a #1 song.

Huffington Post published an article last year on how Les Moonves instructed Viacom to ban ALL Janet's music, including the new singles. Like I told you before, the singles were projected to become hits. Then Moonves f***ed things up and too much damage was done (tv appearances were not gonna get Janet a top ten hit later that year).

Janet was everywhere in 2004.. From late night to SNL to Will & Grace to every magazine that would have her pose half naked to Europe... Oprah... 2004 was her biggest promo year ever so you are wrong. While radio & CBS blacklist her, she was still on BET, ABC, NBC

Yes.. you agreed that Damita Jo was weak af compared to 1986-2001 so why the five paragraph essay?

    We’re not talking about sales

Yes, she had interviews and stuff, but non-fans are not going to buy your album or singles unless they hear it on the radio frequently

I’m familiar with her chart success, or lack thereof... but the music was trash. I don’t care if you want to accept that fact or not

It's just your opinion dude. You can't say that it's trash and that that is a fact. You clearly dislike Damita Jo which is fine, but you can't say the fact that it failed on the charts and sales-wise is because it's 'trash'. There's actual trashy music out there that is #1 all over the world. 💁🏻‍♂️

    Right which is my logic

I can’t defend against your fantasy la la world. I can only defend the truth

Its not my fantasy world, my friend. At 37, Janet had a #2 album (consider that Usher was #1 and the hot new thing atm) which is not bad at all. Of course, people bought the album after the Superbowl hysteria but the singles were pretty much only bought by the fans because radio didn't support. Thats why she peaked at #45 and #57 on the Hot 100. Without big airplay. You need radio and tv support (Viacom) and non-fans to buy the music too.

Album sales. Each album sold less than the previous

Sales don't always equal success. Plus, literally everyones album sales decline.

TVR era got Janet 1 #1 hit

AFY era got Janet 2 #1 hits 💁🏻‍♂️

It's likely, with the previous success, that Damita Jo might've got Janet one more #1 Hot 100 hit. Like @janet.1814 says, things like a world tour and the Superbowl shouldve made Janets exposure on the charts even bigger (which results in higher sales)

Janet was on a decline to begin with. I would have never assumed, between 2002-2004.. pre-blacklist, that her next album was going to sell more copies than her previous and greatest album of the 2000s

Uhm... How exactly was she on a decline? All For You gave her two (!) #1 hits and a #3 hit on the Hot 100 in her mid-30s! The success of All For You was probably why Damita Jo was predicted to be a success as well. Then the Viacom-boycott started (also in large parts of Europe!) and everything changed.

Correct. Unbreakable is the only Janet album that that applies to

Damita Jo sold what it should have sold. It’s not her best or worst (Discipline or Dreamstreet are her worst) but Damita Jo & 20 are not better than anything from 1986-2001 & 2015

It deserved better. Much better. And we both know sales would've been much bigger and the singles would've done much better. Radio and TV airplay is everything.

I’m not here for what-if scenarios.

That’s exactly why actually, for me. Damita Jo was subpar bc Janet decided to work with people who she doesn’t work well with. 20 was bad bc of JD... Discipline was shit bc Janet decided to be lazy and not work with Jimmy/Terry. Not to mention the oversexual themes and promo (unnecessary at that point of her career)

Your theory is wrong due to Unbreakable being her best album since 2001 and it had zero hits and minimal radio spins (as if that mattered)

Great albums don't always equal success. I'm not saying Damita Jo is her best album, it's just that Damita Jo and its era would've been much bigger if Jan wasn't blacklisted. It doesn't matter how you feel about the songs. The reviews were really good.

Because the singles from DJ are trash... JALW, IWY, AN(ds)... 🗑

The era you described didn’t have too many cooks and created the classic Janet sound... DJ went outside that scope and not in a good way

I really have to disagree with you this time around.

Imagine this: The Superbowl stunt with the exposed bra went as it was supposed to happen. Radio and TV (MTV, VH1) played the singles. The singles reached AT LEAST the top 10 (note: the reviews were positive; radio & tv would've picked up the singles). Due to the successful singles there would've been at least 1 more music video, Janet would've gone on the Damita Jo World Tour and the singles were all over radio.

The reason some fans dislike the Damita Jo, 20 Y.O. and Discipline era is NOT because the records were "bad" but because mainstream radio and tv didn't pick it up so it never got as huge as the 1986-2001 albums. As fans we probably would've liked the album better if it did very well and was all over radio and tv.

No. I can’t. All singles from DJ were 🗑

    I answered the question

Uhm. What YOU think about the singles is not really important. Wasn't it Billboard that wrote a review about JALW saying it was most likely going to be a hit? And why wouldn't the singles be succesful? All her 1986-2001 albums had big hits, so why not the Damita Jo album? The songs totally fit in the 2004 sound so radio and TV would've definitely played it.

:lmao: Delusional fans will tell you it was “soaring up the charts” before the blacklist... it was not

Fans would tell you it was being playing a lot on radio... sure.. bc of the controversy

Usher’s Confessions album was #1 for several weeks.. beating out Janet

Well. You can imagine how well the songs would've done on the charts in the US if Viacom didn't blacklist the singles.

*All Of Velvet Rope, All For You, Damita Jo and 20 Y.O. Are blocked

*All Of Discipline, Unbreakable and Made For Now are available

This isn’t to say there are not any reuploads, but the videos that seem to can NOT be reuploaded are Runaway and All For You.

Thanks for this information! Seems like there are not that many differences with Europe. We're missing some more janet. videos and we only have the Got Til It's Gone video from TVR, and So Excited from 20 Y.O.

Streaming or it would be a dud

    Arent all her shows recorded?

Yes, but the tickets never say "Show will be recorded". Why would they say that so prominently on the ticket?

it's kinda like having all her tour books into one really nice package a coffee table book which I'm feeling so thanks for showing that because it makes me want it. Ive got so many items from over the years, and I'm kinda tired of keeping them, I've got tour books , magazine, Miss Janet Fanclub items, I kinda want to just consolidate my admiration into a coffee book

Some older tour book pictures are in this book, yes, but there are a LOT of rare pictures as well. It's a great book!

Her career suffered yes. But personally I think she loved him and he loved her. They might just be soulmates...

I still feel like they could get back together. Yes, what he did was wrong but she forgave him and they're still friends. There was great chemistry between them and as long as he stays away from her production team i would like to see them back together.
