jarrylf
That album just continues to slay my life, and the world. How are RN & Control tied, no offense to Control, but I'd think with the kind of success that ear had it'd be on the hills of janet. (tho era wise I guess it should be bigger than janet. since it had more successful singles) rather than always so close to Control. I never quite got that, like right off the bat if Control got 14mil (which I think is appropriate, tho it's been that number for a while) I'd assume RN would be around 18mil because of the success and stats that album got, and continues to get. bu.
That 36 million is album sales alone. janet. sold 36million?
bu.
OH. Janet the artist sold 36million+ albums in the US alone. I see now. So 100Million records worldwide is far from accurate...more like 150million.
Bailey
I think as long as Janet got her money she don't care so we don't really know the real numbers because two of her albums pre-date soundscan

Bailey
I care . When did Soundscan start? soundscan began in 1991 after Control and after RN had sold most of it's copies....in order to have accurate sales figures for Janet's career we would need recertifications of her earlier albums sales problem is that will cost money with no money to be gained. Bailey
So how did they track shit then? I'm not entirely sure, but if they went to soundscan they must have believed it reflected more accuracy not less. I think soundscan took into account spins and more than just physical copies moved
Bailey
Control and RN should be diamond albums. they probably are, you couldn't escape RN that album was huge across the planet, but once again as long as Janet know she got paid for them would she really care about the numbers? Bailey
Previously, Billboard tracked sales by calling stores across the U.S. and asking about sales - a method that was inherently error-prone and open to outright fraud. Indeed, while transitioning from the calling to tracking methods, the airplay and sales charts (already monitored by Nielsen) and the Hot 100 (then still using the calling system) often did not match (for instance Paula Abdul's Promise of a New Day and Roxette's Fading Like a Flower reached much higher Hot 100 peaks than their actual sales and airplay would have allowed them to).[4] The Recording Industry Association of America also tracks sales (or more specifically, shipments minus potential returns) on a long-term basis through the RIAA certification system; it has never used either Nielsen SoundScan or the store-calling method. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SoundScan
Mr. Wonder
Control should be 7x platinum at minimum. RN at least 9x platinum.
hotboy06
The impact of those two albums should have them sitting at diamond status!
Mr. Wonder
RN and janet. are Janet's best two chances at diamond. Their global figures should be updated though. It seems odd that two consecutive albums sold the exact same amount.

Kennita Jo.
Control should be 7x platinum at minimum. RN at least 9x platinum. If RN is 9 then janet. would most likely be Diamond no?

Bailey
If RN is 9 then janet. would most likely be Diamond no? no you have it right, Janet. was Janet Jackson most commercially successful project
Mr. Wonder
If RN is 9 then janet. would most likely be Diamond no? Possibly. The known figures put it just under 8 million. A lot of the albums that have scanned 7 million+ are certified 10x platinum like Mariah's "Music Box". "janet." could be diamond.

jarrylf
yea it just really seems like Control & RN have been at 14mil forever, and it's just so odd that they're tied when they have 2 very different levels of success, yet they're tied. I think that was weird to me ever since the 1st time I saw that they were.
Mr. Wonder
I'm not sure when the RIAA started counting club sales, but Janet did sell millions through them. She moved 4.3 million through BMG alone. And if Columbia House was bigger, then you could tack on another couple million to the known total. bu.
What's a club sale? Did people sell CD's in clubs ?
Mr. Wonder
No. Music clubs are retailers that operate directly out of a warehouse. You mail in your order and they send it to you.
