How depressing. Does anybody know true (or reputable) worldwide sales of Control, RN, janet. and TVR? The one I care about the most is janet. because I want to see that it's sold close to 20 mill. Mr. Wonder
Where the hell were you back when Number Ones was released???? CONTROL sold more than 14 million copies worldwide, with five #1 singles. The best-selling album of 1990, RHYTHM NATION 1814 sold more than 14 million copies worldwide, making Janet the first and only artist in history to produce seven top 5 hits from one album. JANET, sold 20 million albums worldwide, with six hit singles and a nomination for an Academy Award® for Best Original Song, "Again." THE VELVET ROPE has sold more than 10 million worldwide, with six hit singles. ALL FOR YOU was Janet's fifth consecutive album to debut at #1, with more than seven million in worldwide sales. http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/janet-jacksons-greatest-hits-celebrated-on-number-ones-64079852.html IDK why these labels are still quoting 14mil for Control and RN1814. That figure is from 1998, and I doubt they sold the same amount.
eli's_rhythm
Sorry I don't read the press releases all the way through RN DEFINITELY sold more than Control. The fact that those numbers are screwy makes me question the numbers for janet. as well so what validity does that have at all? I'm not taking a possibly inflated/inaccurate press release at face value. IDK about 10M for TVR.
Mr. Wonder
"International megastar Janet Jackson, who has sold over 100 million albums worldwide...." http://multivu.prnewswire.com/mnr/umusic/31098/ Most press released have inflated figures because there's no way to accurately track worldwide sales. To the degree the sales are inflated is unknown. Now unless you can disprove the validity of ANYTHING a record labels says, then the sales are what they report. Mr. Wonder
Just to bring things up to speed: Albums Soundscan - 61,815 Sony BMG - 82,000 = 143,815 Worldwide = ~1 million Soundscan - 21,320 Sony BMG -44,000 = 65,320 Worldwide = ~1 million Certification - 5x platinum Soundscan - 505,018 BMG Club House - 883,000 = 6,388,018 Worldwide = 14 million Control is obviously 6x platinum. Columbia House was comparable in size to Sony BMG Music Club, so it has probably sold the same amount there as in BMG. So Control could be 7 or 8x platinum. Worldwide = ~200,000 Certification - 6x platinum Soundscan - 1,389,047 Sony BMG - 1,100,000 = 8,489,047 Worldwide = 14 million The figure ties in nicely with the NY Daily News estimate of 8.5 million Certification - 6x platinum Soundscan - 7,025,727 Sony BMG - 860,000 = 7,885,727 Worldwide = 20 million janet. should obviously be 8x platinum, probably more. Worldwide = ~1 million Certification - 2x platinum Soundscan - 2,439,001 Sony BMG - 1,480,000 = 3,919,001 Worldwide = 10 million Obviously should be 4x platinum. As it continues to be one of Janet's best sellers in her back catalog, it could be 5x platinum. Certification - 3x platinum Soundscan - 3,237,266 Sony BMG - 420,000 = 3,657,266 Worldwide = 10 million Certification - 2x platinum Soundscan - 3,108,795 (+DVD Edition - 136,250 [as of 2005]) Sony BMG - 100,000 = 3,345,045 Worldwide = 7 million AFY should be 3x platinum. It COULD possibly be 4x platinum. Certification - Platinum Soundscan - 1,004,428 = 1,004,428 Worldwide = 3 million Certification - Platinum Soundscan - 679,000 Worldwide = 1.5 million Soundscan - 451,209 = 451,209 Worldwide = ~900k Soundscan - ~180,000+ (double disc over 100 minutes, so it counts twice); 360,000+ Worldwide = 750k+ Soundscan - 46,216 Total confirmed U.S. album sales = 36,457,092 Total estimated worldwide album sales = ~84,000,000 Her RIAA certifications are obviously at least 40 million. She sold 4,743,000 albums through Sony BMG Music Club. As stated previously, Columbia House was comparable in size so you could tack on another 3 or 4 million albums. If you factor in other club house sales, reshipments, etc, I estimate her RIAA tally to be about 42 million max.
