eli's_rhythm
lol I always thought you sort of guessed that she sold 140m and threw it out there for the uneducated. It's cool to know that it's an educated guess. Really wish her albums weren't so undercertified, but at the end of the day she gets just as much respect as Madonna, Whitney and Mariah among those in the know (more than Mariah really), so it doesn't matter too much. Oh no. After all the searching I did, and the estimations I saw, I came up with the figure, and included the sales from the press releases. So the 140mil is definitely more a more likely figure. bu.
What is the "770 999 50"?
Mr. Wonder
It's the Janet album. I forgot what the numbers mean but I can find out.
bu.
Could it be the total digital sales of the album since that iTunes deal started . That in itself would add another gold certification to the album as well as a soon to be platinum one. I swear that album should be diamond overall by now
Kim
What is the "770 999 50"? 770 = this week's sales 999 = percentage change in sales 50 = last week's sales janet. was on sale on Amazon MP3 recently so that probably boosted the numbers. Kim
Physical and digital sales can't be combined because they are counted differently. Wait, what? Aren't they combined? Can you explain that further?

Kim
Physical and digital sales are counted separately because they're two different formats. But Billboard counts them together, no?
bu.
Physical and digital sales can't be combined because they are counted differently. Really? But doesn't Billboard count them together? So 300,000 digital sales and 200,000 physical sales doesn't = a gold record?
Kim
Really? But doesn't Billboard count them together? So 300,000 digital sales and 200,000 physical sales doesn't = a gold record? Nielsen sales figures don't really = RIAA certifications, since RIAA is based on shipments and not sales. But from my understanding, digital music providers, like iTunes, also order "shipments" of how many units of albums they can sell. So they should be combined with physical sales/shipments... Mr. Wonder
Doesn't work like that. You can't ship 500,000 singles to iTunes because it's digital. Two different formats, two different certifications.
Kim
What do you mean by "shipments?" "Shipments" refers to recorded music products sold by the music companies net of returns (including digital products). This does not indicate the exact amount of product sold to final consumers, as changes in retailer inventory levels can affect shipments. For point-of-sale data, we refer you to Nielsen SoundScan (www.soundscan.com). http://www.riaa.com/keystatistics.php?content_selector=research-shipment-database-faq
Mr. Wonder
Shipments are the physical copies of a product that are shipped to retailers (stores, music clubs, retailers, etc).
Kim
Looks like they do combine digital and physical shipments, at least in their reports: http://76.74.24.142/FA8A2072-6BF8-D44D-B9C8-CE5F55BBC050.pdf But it's not really clear how or if they factor them together in the certification process. I'm going to assume they just combine it like they do with their reports.
Mr. Wonder
But they're not certified the same way.

bu.
1,469 in a little over 3 months, bringing total US album sales (physical) to 36,467,834. Is that 36million album sales or albums AND singles?
Mr. Wonder
That 36 million is album sales alone.
