Mr. Wonder
But doesn't platinum/gold etc refer to shipments, rather than sales???? If she's platinum, doesnt mean she sold a million Exactly. Looking at 20YO, it's platinum, but it hasn't actually sold a million, it's at 657k as of now. Mr. Wonder
According the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), Janet Jackson ranks at number 11 among solo female artists, with 26 million units certified. (The RIAA's list of all artists is viewable here). According to Nielsen SoundScan, which began tracking data in 1991, Jackson since that year has sold 19,874,000 albums. As we've recently analyzed with Carey, Celine Dion, Houston and Madonna, let's run down Janet Jackson's top-sellers since 1991, according to Nielsen SoundScan. 7,010,000, "janet." (1993) 3,229,000, "The Velvet Rope" (1997) 3,107,000, "All for You" (2001) 2,422,000, "Design of a Decade 1986/1996" (1995) 1,377,000, "Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814" (1989) 1,002,000, "Damita Jo" (2004) 655,000, "20 Y.O." (2006) 496,000, "Control" (1986) 446,000, "Discipline" (2008) And, what's one more comparison involving Carey, Houston and Madonna - and Janet Jackson? Dating to Jackson's first week on the Billboard Hot 100 dated Dec. 12, 1982 (at age 16), in that span since, five artists have notched 10 or more No. 1s: Carey (18), Madonna (12), Houston (11) and Janet and Michael Jackson (10 each). Just more evidence that all the artists we've been spotlighting in this discussion are unquestionably chart royalty. See Source Okay, now comparing her sales to just last March when Billboard did the same thing: "janet." (1993), 7,005,000 "The Velvet Rope" (1997), 3,227,000 "All for You" (2001), 3,105,000 "Design of a Decade 1986/1996" (1995), 2,411,000 "Damita Jo" (2004), 1,002,000 "20 Y.O." (2006), 655,000 "Discipline" (2008), 441,000 See Source We see a boost in her sales (MJ's passing probably played the biggest part). So between March and September, we see: Janet. has sold another 5,000 copies. VR has sold another 2,000 copies. DOAD has sold an additional 11,000 copies AFY has sold another 2,000 copies RN1814 has scanned 1,377,000 Control has scanned 496,000 DJ and 20 remain unchanged. Discipline has sold another 5,000 copies. So between March 20th, and September 6th, Janet's back catalogue alone has sold another 20,000 albums. We can't add Control or RN, cuz there are no numbers for them in the March article.
Mr. Wonder
Don't mind me, I'm just clearing out my Favorites with all my Janet stuff. I'd love to Billboard to do another rundown of her Soundscan totals, btw.
Mr. Wonder
JANET JACKSON SINGLE 'RUNAWAY' GOES GOLD New York, November 13 - Janet Jackson's "Runaway," the first single off her new album "Janet Jackson - Design of a Decade 1986/1996," has reached gold status. This marks Jackson's 17th gold single, more than any other female artist. "Runaway" debuted at number 6 on the Billboard Top 100. This was the highest debuting single for a female artist ever. To date, the album has sold 4 million copies worldwide in the 4 weeks since its release. The album, Jackson's first compilation, was released by A&M Records on October 10, 1995. http://www.prnewswire.co.uk/cgi/news/release?id=35185
Mr. Wonder
Ms. Jackson's "Design of a Decade 1986/1996" and Madonna's "Something to Remember" were at a slight disadvantage because they are mostly previously released songs: they sold 129,000 and 112,600, respectively, in their initial week on sale. http://www.nytimes.com/1995/11/30/arts/the-pop-life-073440.html

The last known number was 175k as of January 85 JACKSON*JANET #1S - 2CD 712 54 462 175,892 So by now it's obviously at 176k, 352k total because it's a double disc over 100mins. Discipline is up to 449k. http://new.music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart_watch/51507/week-ending-april-11-2010-bieber-bounces-back/
Mr. Wonder
Okay ladies, gentlemen, and TOF.....the good sis on Pulse pulled Soundscan numbers from the database. The last time Billboard ran down Janet's Soundscan number was in September 2009. As follows: 7,010,000, "janet." (1993) 3,229,000, "The Velvet Rope" (1997) 3,107,000, "All for You" (2001) 2,422,000, "Design of a Decade 1986/1996" (1995) 1,377,000, "Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814" (1989) 1,002,000, "Damita Jo" (2004) 655,000, "20 Y.O." (2006) 496,000, "Control" (1986) 446,000, "Discipline" (2008) See Source And as of May 27, 2011: 7,025,727 - janet. 3,237,266 - The Velvet Rope 3,108,795 - All For You 2,439,001 - Design Of A Decade 1,389,047 - Rhythm Nation 1814 1,004,428 - Damita Jo 657,773 - 20 Y.O. 505,018 - Control 451,209 - Discipline See Source Albums sold from 9/2009 to 5/2011: Control - 9,018 Rhythm Nation 1814 - 12,047 janet. - 15,727 Design Of A Decade - 17,001 Velvet Rope - 8,266 All For You - 1,795 Damita Jo - 2,428 20 Y.O. - 2,773 Discipline - 5,209 = 74,264 albums sold @ those sales of RN, janet., and DOAD @ those sales of AFY @ AFY getting outsold by DJ, 20YO, and Discipline @ janet. outselling RN. Back in Janetuary, Number Ones was at a little over 175,000. By now, it is probably at 180,000. As it counts as a double disc, because it's over 100 minutes, the units sold is 360,000. Mr. Wonder
According to the RIAA, Janet is certified for 26 million albums in the US. Broken down by album and single Janet's tallies are as follows: Albums Janet Jackson Era Soundscan - 61,815 Sony BMG - 82,000 = 143,815 Dream Street Era Soundscan - 21,320 Sony BMG -44,000 = 65,320 Control Era Certification - 5x platinum Soundscan - 505,018 BMG Club House - 883,000 = 6,388,018 Control is obviously 6x platinum. The album could possibly be 7x platinum. Rhythm Nation 1814 Era Certification - 6x platinum Soundscan - 1,389,047 Sony BMG - 1,100,000 = 8,489,047 Before the inception of Soundscan in May of 1991, it was reported by the NY Times that RN1814 had passed the 6 million mark (See Source). Thus, the Soundscan numbers can be added separately with the certification and BMG total. The figure ties in nicely with the NY Daily News estimate of 8.5 million http://www.nydailynews.com/gossip/2009/11/19/2009-11-19_janet_jacksons_hopes_for_new_future_with_old_label_am_records.html Due to the proximity of the known figure with the NY estimate, we can safely assume NY Daily News is true. = 8,500,000 RN1814 is Janet's best chance at having a diamond album (10x platinum in the US). janet. Era Certification - 6x platinum Soundscan - 7,025,727 Sony BMG - 860,000 = 7,885,727 janet. should obviously be 8x platinum, probably more. Most of the albums hovering around the 8 million mark are certified between 8 and 10 times platinum. janet. is Janet's second best chance at a diamond album. Design of a Decade Era Certification - 2x platinum Soundscan - 2,439,001 Sony BMG - 1,480,000 = 3,919,001 Should be 4x platinum. This is Janet's best seller in her back catalog, so it's obviously 4x platinum at the minimum. The Velvet Rope Era Certification - 3x platinum Soundscan - 3,237,266 Sony BMG - 420,000 = 3,657,266 All For You Era Certification - 2x platinum Soundscan - 3,108,795 (+DVD Edition - 136,250 [as of 2005]) Sony BMG - 100,000 = 3,345,045 Damita Jo Era Certification - Platinum Soundscan - 1,004,428 = 1,004,428 20 Y.O. Era Certification - Platinum Soundscan - 679,000 = 679,000 Discipline Era Soundscan - 451,209 = 451,209 Number Ones Era Soundscan - 172,000 (double disc over 100 minutes, so it counts twice); 344,000 Icon Soundscan - 46,216 Total U.S. album sales = 36,457,092 Her RIAA certifications are obviously at least 36 million, and she is thus under certified by 10 million albums. She sold 4,743,000 albums through Sony BMG Music Club. As stated previously, Columbia House was comparable in size so you could tack on another 3 or 4 million albums. If you factor in other club house sales, reshipments, etc, Janet's estimated RIAA tally to be about 40-42 million albums shipped in the United States. henrietta.
@ those sales of AFY @ AFY getting outsold by DJ, 20YO, and Discipline I just don't understand why Virgin didn't push the AFY album. That era was basically a Goddess-era given to them but they didn't take it Will you explain the double disc = 2x sales thing to me AFY SHOULD have at least outsold TVR in the states. COGU could have been Janet's 11th #1 or 28th top ten hit. That could have pushed the album to 4 million in the states. Janet wanted TAT as a single, but that wouldn't have worked. It slays as an album track, and it should stay that way. As for the double disc, any time an artist puts out a 2 disc album, if the total play time is over 100 minutes, it counts twice. So for Number Ones, it's over 100 minutes, so even though it has scanned 180k, it's considered 360k.

I think "TAT" would have been a great Rock single for her Especially with a crazy video for it Okay...got it. Seems like if I ever became an artist, I would constantly do double discs

Mr. Wonder
It wouldn't have worked as a single given the musical climate of pop music circa 2001/2002. Bubble gum pop was still quite popular then. Plus, TAT had been released, it would have been one less great album track.
ThatOtherFan
I just don't understand why Virgin didn't push the AFY album. That era was basically a Goddess-era given to them but they didn't take it Do NOT get me started on Virgin mishandling the AFY era and not taking advantage of what should have been one of Janet's biggest eras...EVER Had that era been as huge as it should have been, it would have set Janet up nicely for the rest of the decade. I personally believe, if AFY was as massive as it should have been, the SB incident wouldn't have impacted Janet's career they way it did. AFY SHOULD have at least outsold TVR in the states. COGU could have been Janet's 11th #1 or 28th top ten hit. That could have pushed the album to 4 million in the states. Janet wanted TAT as a single, but that wouldn't have worked. It slays as an album track, and it should stay that way. LIES! If that era had been handled properly EVERY single released from that era would have gone AT LEAST top 10. That was Janet's "Emancipation of Mimi" but Virgin TOTALLY missed the opportunity. The climate of the time was "bubblegum/pop" but AFY had the potential to be a game changer...and if not a game changer, it would have had it's own lane in terms of success. Mr. Wonder
Oh yeah, cuz "China Love" had top 10 written all over it. How could Virgin have been so blind? TAT needed to stay as an album track. It would've done what SOAG did, maybe a little better. It wasn't gonna be a top 10 hit either way you look at it. COGU was the obvious 4th single choice. Then TAT could've been a promo song like 24play was to DOAD.

SOAG would've done better itself if Virgin had handled things better. They fucked up the opportunity by not getting STCML to #1. It did excellent, but actually could have done SO MUCH better. The way they dealt with the singles killed the momentum for the project as a whole by the time they got to SOAG. You BITCH! :lmao: It wasn't funny....at all...
