Academy Awards Winners - 2014 Season Film Awards Thread

I could not find the official thread (I'm sure hotboy or bailey made one) for awards so I thought I would make one. What prompted me to start early? Well I just read an article about how Cate Blanchett is being tipped for an early frontrunner for best actress following "rave reviews" over her role in Woody Allens Blue Jasmine.

Who do you expect to lead the forefront this season?

Is Meryl Streep around?

The Butler was WONDERFUL, seen it twice & looking for a reason to watch it a 3rd time, she & Whitaker SLAYED, and I bought their chemistry and them as a couple & parents. So I think it'd be CRAZY if neither of them got any recognition through awards or nominations, especially after how great it did box office wise.

Why thank you Bu for the mention, no I have not started any award threads, that being said I was surprised there was no Emmy thread made either last week. I was listening to NPR and they were discussing this fall's TV season and how basically no one cares about network TV anymore, with some exceptions like the Big Bang Theory. Where TV is now is on cable shows, and there are a few new shows coming that folks may enjoy. I'm picky so I don't know what I will watch. As for movies we haven't quite hit that sweet spot of the year where they run out all the award worthy films, Im hoping this year's crop is good, the last few years have been hit and miss for me.

Oscars are in March. Golden Globes next week.

I really wanted The Butler to win big but they weren't even nominated in the GG.

they will get something especially Forester .....I just saw the blue ray leak this weekend perfect copy..... I believe Kevin Spacey will win a GG

I saw it too - it was a great copy. Seemed better than the cinema one . I hope they get something from the Oscars. That film is too good to be overlooked. Not seen 12 Years Of A Slave yet but that seems to be getting the glory Butler deserves. It's like GG are saying there's only room for one "black" movie. At least they got nommed in the Screen Actors Guild awards.

some Black people I know are very upset at the movies depicting Blacks as nothing but ex slaves, and some say they refuse to see those movies

I can understand their frustration. But Whoopi, Cuba and Halle didn't depict slaves and won? These kinds of movies are important imo because it's a good way of educating people that may not necessarily know the ins and outs of slavery, racism or the struggle. I myself cried tears of happiness at the end of The Butler because it was only then...when you see the whole struggle depicted in this movie that I realized what a great moment in history Barack Obama winning is/was.

I agree and say the same thing, but people argue their view and I just let them

12 Years a Slave

American Hustle

Captain Phillips

Dallas Buyers Club

Gravity

Her

Nebraska

Philomena

The Wolf of Wall Street

This race is between AH and 12 Years. With AH leading all nominees, I'm expecting it to take it. But I hope 12 Years win.

Will Win: American Hustle

Should Win: 12 Years A Slave

Dark Horse: Gravity

Best director

Alfonso Cuaron, Gravity

Steve McQueen, 12 Years a Slave

Alexander Payne, Nebraska

David O Russell, American Hustle

Martin Scorsese, The Wolf of Wall Street

A very tight race. I'm thinking Alfonso is going to take this one.

Will Win: Alfonso Cuaron

Should Win: Steve McQueen

Dark Horse: David O'Russell

Best actor

Christian Bale, American Hustle

Bruce Dern, Nebraska

Leonardo DiCaprio, The Wolf of Wall Street

Chiwetel Ejiofor, 12 Years a Slave

Matthew McConaughey, Dallas Buyers Club

Another tight race. This could be anyone's Oscar. I'm betting on Chiwetel Ejiofor, but Matthew McConaughey could come and snatch.

Will Win: Matthew McConaughey

Should Win: Chiwetel Ejiofor

Dark Horse: Bruce Dern

Best actress

Amy Adams, American Hustle

Cate Blanchett, Blue Jasmine

Sandra Bullock, Gravity

Judi Dench, Philomena

Meryl Streep, August: Osage County

Meryl gets her another Oscar nomination which takes her to number 18 and in the process snubbed Emma Thompson. Actually Amy Adams took Emma Thompson's place. Oh..and Cate Blanchett will win this one.

Will win: Cate Blanchett

Should win: Cate Blanchett

Dark Horse: Judi Dench

^Oh, and I rewatched Notes on A Scandal over the weekend and those two were absolutely superb.

Best supporting actor

Barkhad Abdi, Captain Phillips

Bradley Cooper, American Hustle

Michael Fassbender, 12 Years a Slave

Jonah Hill, The Wolf of Wall Street

Jared Leto, Dallas Buyers Club

Congrats Barkhad! But the Oscar will go to Jared Leto.

Will Win: Jared Leto

Should Win: Jared Leto

Dark Horse: Barkhad Abdi

Best supporting actress

Sally Hawkins, Blue Jasmine

Jennifer Lawrence, American Hustle

Lupita Nyong'o, 12 Years a Slave

Julia Roberts, August: Osage County

June Squibb, Nebraska

This should be a no brainer, but in Hollywood, everything isn't what it seems. Lupita should walk away with the Oscar, but J. Law is gaining momentum and could the youngest actor ever to win back to back Oscars.

Will Win: Lupita Nyong'o

Should Win: Lupita Nyong'o

Dark Horse: June Squibb
