Opening our Top 10 for 1996 is Keith Sweat with 'Nobody', a duet featuring Athena Cage. The song was a No. 1 success on the R&B chart where it ruled for three weeks, whilst reaching third position on the Hot 100. 'Nobody' was also a Top 10 hit in New Zealand reaching No. 9. Elsewhere the track peaked at No. 22 in Australia and No. 30 in the UK. Its self-titled parent album became Sweat's fifth consecutive No. 1 album on the US R&B chart and remains his best-selling to date. 'Nobody' marks the last time Sweat entered the Top 10 of the Hot 100, falling short in 1998 with the No. 12-peaking 'Come And Get With Me' featuring Snoop Dogg.

Landing in ninth spot for 1996 is the queen of hip-hop/soul, Mary J. Blige. 'Not Gon' Cry' was the third single lifted from the smash hit Waiting To Exhale soundtrack and also served as the closing track on Blige's Share My World LP released in 1997. The Babyface-penned and produced ballad ruled the R&B chart for five weeks in the first quarter of 1996, whilst peaking at No. 2 on the Hot 100 behind Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men's monstrous 'One Sweet Day'. The song earned Blige her first Grammy nomination in the category for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance at the 39th ceremony, where she also performed. Internationally, 'Not Gon' Cry' peaked at No. 12 in New Zealand and No. 39 in the UK.
