TBS pulls the plug on comedian’s late-night talker

Nope, it’s not a joke: TBS has cancelled George Lopez’s show, Lopez Tonight.

Entertainment Weekly broke the news Wednesday afternoon, saying the comedian’s late-night talker would conclude its two-year run this Thursday night.

“TBS has reached the difficult decision not to order a third season of Lopez Tonight,” read a statement from the network.

“We are proud to have partnered with George Lopez, who is an immensely talented comedian and entertainer. TBS has valued its partnership with George and appreciates all of his work on behalf of the network, both on and off.”

Lopez Tonight was TBS’s first foray into late-night television when it launched in 2009. It was followed by Conan O’Brien joining the network following his exit from NBC.

Though this comes as a bit of a surprise, there were rumblings earlier this year when Lopez’s ratings started to drop when his program moved from 11 p.m. to midnight to make room for O’Brien’s show.
