The most bizarre upgrade requests revealed

SOME passengers will do almost anything to score a flight upgrade, a survey by Virgin Atlantic has revealed.

The airline receives numerous upgrade requests every day, with one of the most creative stories told by a man who was travelling with his pregnant wife and begged for an upgrade away from her as he needed time to relax.

Not surprisingly, his request led to a heated argument with his wife.

Another traveller said he really needed an upgrade as his newborn baby has claustrophobia and is in counselling, so they need more space. :umm:

One couple even turned up at the check-in desk in full wedding attire in a bid to get bumped up.

Other unusual tales passengers have told include claiming to be Virgin boss Sir Richard Branson’s dentist, being really upset due to soccer team Manchester United losing a match and needing extra space to get over it and a traveller who said he lost all of his money in Vegas but needed an upgrade.

A tall passenger pleaded for extra leg room and another man reasoned that nobody flies on a Sunday so he should be upgraded. :umm:

The survey also revealed some of the most common reasons passengers asked for an upgrade – with Mr Branson’s name mentioned frequently.

The most popular lines heard include passengers claiming to be Mr Branson's friends, saying Mr Branson promised them an upgrade, saying they are on their honeymoon or it’s their birthday or being too tall for economy.

Virgin Atlantic spokesman Paul Dickinson warned travellers that their upgrade requests are unlikely to be successful.

"In truth, free upgrades are rarely offered and the only way to be certain of experiencing what our cabins have to offer is to book the cabin you want in advance.

“If on the rare occasion we do need to offer an upgrade, we usually prioritise our most loyal customers from our frequent flyer programme."
