Ask Billboard: Janet Jackson earns the honor of...

Hi Sandra,

Thanks for e-mailing from "Down Under" (to borrow the title of one of those 998 non-Lady Gaga Hot 100 No. 1s).

What an interesting angle. While it would take extensive research to list every occurrence of an artist ruling the Hot 100 as they celebrated birthdays (especially including members of every group to top the tally), a look at last year's chart-topping songs reveals the coincidence having happened twice.

Ke$ha spent her ninth and final week at No. 1 with "TiK ToK" when she turned 23 March 1; and, Bruno Mars blew out candles Oct. 8, his 25th birthday, while perched atop the Hot 100 for four weeks with "Just the Way You Are."

Let's look at the solo artists with the most Hot 100 leaders and see if any of their birthdays coincide with chart reigns.

The solo singer with the most No. 1s (18), Mariah Carey, has never ruled the Hot 100 on her birthday (March 27), although she's come close with two songs. "Someday" (1991) and "One Sweet Day," with Boyz II Men (1996), each dropped from the summit a week before she would have tallied such a double.

With 13 solo No. 1s, Michael Jackson also never achieved the feat. His last leader, "You Are Not Alone," reached No. 1 Sept. 2, 1995, four days after his 37th birthday.

When we get to the solo artist with the third-most Hot 100 No. 1s, Madonna (12), we finally find a match. "Papa Don't Preach" reached the summit Aug. 16, 1986, Madonna's 28th birthday. (Like "Born This Way," "Preach" also sports a theme about birth ...)

Janet Jackson earns the honor of being the only artist with a double-digit No. 1s total (10) to have commanded the chart twice on her birthday. Born May 16, 1966, Jackson began an eight-week domination May 15, 1993, with "That's the Way Love Goes" and continued her eventual seven-week stay at No. 1 with "All for You" on her 35th birthday in 2001.

"Born This Way," which spent its first six weeks at No. 1 before dipping to No. 4 this week, stands as the only Hot 100 No. 1 with "born" in its title. Previously, Steppenwolf's "Born to Be Wild" had been the highest-charting such song, having logged three weeks at No. 2 in 1968.

The top-charting song with "birthday" in its title? Jeremih's "Birthday Sex," which rose to No. 4 in 2009, besting the No. 6 peak of Neil Sedaka's "Happy Birthday, Sweet Sixteen" in 1962.

She's the only artist with 10 or more #1 hits to have 2 of those hits be #1 on her birthday.

Well, when you spell it out like that... :umm:

Let's just focus on the "honor of being the only artist" part, mmkay? :asham:
