God
Tea plants are native to East and South Asia and probably originated around the point of confluence of the lands of northeast India, north Burma, southwest China, and Tibet. Although there are tales of tea's first use as a beverage, no one is sure of its exact origins. The first recorded drinking of tea is in China, with the earliest records of tea consumption with records dating back to the 10th century BC. It was already a common drink during Qin Dynasty (around 200 BC) and became widely popular during Tang Dynasty, when it was spread to Korea and Japan. Trade of tea by the Chinese to Western nations in the 19th century spread tea and the tea plant to numerous locations around the world. - Wikipedia
dimpy
@ God I feel like shade has been around for awhile though. People had been called shady for awhile...at least in my part of town. Tea, though. Good question.
Mr. Wonder
Nobody but the gays. "Shade" has been around since the early 2000s, as that's my earliest memory of it. "Tea" has been around since 1981, but I'm not sure if it was used in the same context that it is used today.

I never really heard the term used like it is now until recently though. It could be possible that I've been under a rock.

Kishi
The first time I ever heard of "tea" was from Lady Chablis in "Midnight In The Garden of Good and Evil". She plays herself in the movie which is based on a true story set in the 1980s. She is a transvestite who testifies for a murder case and refers to her "wrapped candy" as her "tea". (this entire clip is hilarious, but she asks the lawyer "Do you want me to explain my tea?" at 2:50) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Ogka7Av5yg The movie "Paris Is Burning" has shade all over and in it, from the late 80's. (please watch this entire movie, but it goes in depth at 3:09) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FUMbtkL2XU&feature=related
