Do artists usually just do a performance (5-10min) or is this like Coachella where they do an entire set?

They do a set, though it'll probably be a shortened.  I want to say JayZ's set was an hour.

I watched it on MSNBC, but they do a TON of cut-aways and kind of dip in and out.  Live streaming is probably the way to go.

And I JUST downloaded my Global Citizen app.  I can get to NYC if I earn them FREE tickets.  Global Citizen is such a great fit for Janet as an artist.  Even if all of the #JanFam can't make it, we should participate in some of the app challenges.

  4. So no lie, I’ve been watching the ticket sales since this tour leg started, and i was legit worried about Charlotte. It’s been hovering around half full for a while, even up to a few days ago. Was also kinda worried that 2 North Carolina shows would cannabalize each other.

But Janet put out those social media posts, and of course gave an EPIC performance in Raleigh. Them ticket sales SNAPPED UP so quick, and the House was nearly full before showtime. This shit is really happening!! Hats off to Janet and her incredible team... they’re getting the formula right on how to boost ticket sales.

Will be interesting to see her boxscore numbers.

I feel what ur saying and I respect it.. especially cuz of the way you broke it down.. and by no means am intending to say that her show isn’t spectacular or exciting as it is, because of course it is.. hell if she rolled out a porta-potty on stage and spent 90 min taking a dump half the members on this forum would still say she took the greatest dump she’s ever taken... all I’m saying is it’s odd that on the first leg she had stage effects and then on the 2nd/3rd leg she doesn’t... the UWT was clearly more elaborate and I just hope that one day she can get back to that type of grand style of concert staging... as it is now the SOTW tour is closer to UCAP staging than anything else

And UCAP was a world tour, so that’s probably a big reason for the calculus... keep it lean so you really can go worldwide without running Katy Perry-style overhead.

I think I said this on the SOTW 1 thread, but I do think a few accent pieces (both costumes and sets) would make a significant impact, even if they only serve to help vary the textures of the visuals. I’ve always loved Janet’s past treatments for Alright... how she’d typically do a zoot suit, but going from black in the RN tour to bold  colors on the JWT through AFY. It’s also an iconic dance piece that really changes the flow of how the dances look. So something like that would be nice.

Would be great to see a scaled version of a whimsical section too, again mainly as a variation of texture. Height differences in stage level, like she used to have with the huge TV boxes, would do wonders to give it a more grandiose feel. IMO that’s the other main reason that Unbreakable felt like a bigger production.  She was up on the staircases and they took full advantage of them at times.

SOTW is just such a great tour and Janet and her team are already doing the work at a superior level.  If they ever wanted to open the budget, those are the places I would start we’re I on the team.

But given the unique set of burdens that she has faced in her career, I understand why it’s so important to proceed with caution as well so I’m here for it either way.

Yea Janet is amazing regardless of her age..

but let’s be ? in here like the grown fkn adults we all are: Janet isn’t out there actively choosing to ditch pyro, it’s merely for budgetary reasons... it’s clear as day! She had pyro/smoke effects through the entire Unbreakable Tour (except in smaller venues), then she postponed everything to have a baby, and then came back and suddenly her show got less grand and visually spectacular and that left Gil attempting to convince fans it was a choice they made to not have stage effects because it’s “all about the lighting” nowadays... that’s bs..

yes janet is proving she can perform without effects (I mean duh obviously), but that doesn’t mean the effects would make the show worse... they could ONLY enhance what she’s already doing

and don’t even act like if she had pyro at her next show that you’d be like “oh wow why does she have that?! She don’t need it! Someone tell her to take the pyro out of the show!! ?”

    ?

So a while back, I posted my "fan guesstimate" of how much Janet has to spend per tour performance...

How much is Janet spending on operating expenses?? My rough estimate based on what some of the more expensive arena tours tend to cost...

10k to secure the date for a venue,

20-40k to rent the venue on performance day

20k to pay for the venue's staff.

100k per performance = pay, living costs for the tour staff

30-50k some sort of cut to LiveNation, possibly paid beforehand to guarantee the tour.

Total operating expenses = $200k per show

Tack on to that one less dancer, slightly less intricate costumes (as they'd have to be performing in the heat of summer) I suspect this is still close to accurate, with one significant exception... 3 of the shows were a guaranteed net for Janet because she served as the festival headliner.  So starting out this leg of the tour ahead is a big plus.  But equally as important? 2 of them give her huge promotion throughout the local markets, buzz to festival circuit devotees across the globe, and exposure to new (younger) audiences that are less familiar with her INCREDIBLE, WIG SNATCHING, LIFE GETTING catalog.

In summation, I'm ok with a break from the pyro if it means MUVA and her crew can take a little more home for their own pockets.

  7. If she ever did a slow segment that went  Lonely => Better Days => Enjoy => Daybreak   I literally think my mental health would be in DANGER :yahoo:

But wow, reading all of this, I am STRUCK by how much she TRULY cares about her fans, and putting on a quality show.

What Craig Jenkins said of Janet today in Vulture is absolutely on point...

"The State of the World tour, like Janet’s 2015 comeback album Unbreakable, sees a singer with hits in four decades toying with the unspoken rules of how to carry her career into her 50s. She’s not a greatest-hits revue, as is the temptation for any artist with enough great songs to tour for life. She isn’t turning into a jukebox of oldies and standards, as aging rock guys like Michael McDonald, Rod Stewart, and the Rolling Stones recently have in their own ways. She’s not coldly courting what’s hot, the way the last few albums by her peer on the ’80s and ’90s pop charts Madonna has, to a mix of critical trepidation and commercial success. Like Prince and Bowie in their latter years, Janet is treating her catalogue like a little universe of her own creation, revisiting memorable terrain and crafting new works that feel both refreshing and comfortingly familiar. It’s a precarious balance, but Janet, a star whose motto is “control” — control of her pop career, control of her public image, control of her press cycle, control of her sexuality — makes it look like a blast."

  8. What confuses me about Europe/ the UK...

    1) If Janet's brothers can tour over there (I'm guessing it's their largest market now, as they perform much more there than they have in the states), then what is the disconnect that prevents Janet from having success in the market?  The Jacksons headline festivals and everything else in the UK... I'm quite shocked that people feel like Janet Jackson, a celebrity everyone knows, could not do the very same thing.

    2) Everyone obsesses about how Janet doesn't have any Number ones in the UK, but she is a HUGE artist there.  4 number ones on the airplay chart, a couple on the UK R&B charts, a ton of Top 10 singles, etc.  The difference between a successful UK/ Europe tour and not?  Probably just doing the same things that she has done stateside... make some appearances, do a couple of interviews, collect an award and she'd be good to go.

    3) It would be great to see Janet actually revisit one of her largest markets... South Africa.  She is an absolute legend in that country, and though the transportation costs are an expense, she'd likely fill lots of seats, surely enough to break even, or possibly support further touring efforts.

  9. 1. Favorite Janet Song-.:wtf:  Velvet Rope, or maybe State Of The World, maybe Nasty

    2. Favorite Janet Tour- State of The World!!!  SOTW1 to be specific, but OMFG I live for them both.

    3. Favorite Movie Janet Starred In- Poetic Justice

    4. Favorite Janet Album- Rhythm Nation (Velvet Rope is a close second)

    5. Favorite Janet Iconic Outfit- the All For You Tour Rhythm Nation segment costume (aka the "catsuit")

    6. Favorite Janet collaboration- Diamonds with Herb Alpert

    7. Favorite Janet Deep Cut- The Body That Loves You,  Night or Lonely (tie)

    8. Most Underrated Janet Album- Damita Jo

    9. Most Overrated Janet Album- I guess janet.  but I still love it and listen to it!!

    10. Least Favorite Janet Tour- Unbreakable World Tour, but I'm glad I got to see it!!

  10. QUEEN is teaching us (and all the young ones) how to craft an ERA!!! She is rocking the plaid and the bold, stylish but comfortable look. Mama J is in a “Don’t Get Read, STAY Ready” mentality and I am forever here for it. We all know State of The World was indeed a new era, and the new music makes it official. But Janet took the time to craft a long transition and is using it to not only rally her long-waiting fans, but pick up some new ones along the way. We might be witnessing one of the greatest comebacks in pop culture history.

  11. Oooh Lawd been reading all of this without comments, so here's what I have saved up...

IF Janet is going the direction of "Throb" and coming through with an upbeat, dancetastic new single, I will be a very happy fan!!!  In 36 years, the one and only Ms. Jackson has delivered some of the most legendary dance club joints of our time, and she has yet to disappoint me on that front.  ?

As for the charts, a 20th Number one of the Dance Club songs chart would be awesome, but I'm not too worried about the Hot 100.  It's kind of overly rigged towards a few select rap stars that are streaming era behemoths.  If Ariana Grande can't land a number one song with the EPIC video for God Is A Woman, it doesn't seem like many others can break through.  But whatever, because Janet's already has 10 number ones across 3 decades.  If another one happens, great!!  If not, cool.

TOO EXCITED for the SOTW kids!!  They've worked so hard and have come a long way since I first saw some of them on the Unbreakable World Tour.  I love how caring and protective they've become of Janet, and they totally understand the legacy that they are carrying on their shoulders now.  How awesome it will be to (hopefully) see them dancing alongside Muva in a new video.  I have true respect for them all.  ???

  12. Review from Lancaster Online (of the Hershey, PA show)...

"The production was an all-around blast, whether you were a die-hard Jackson fan who knew every word of “Skin Game” or someone who has just enjoyed her music casually over the years. Jackson’s State of the World Tour maintained the fine balance between paying tribute to one’s past while still making room for the present."

Thank you! I actually like liked the Unbreakable outfits a lot (not the one you posted) but those below. I think people were just annoyed it wasn't figure hugging or showing skin. I don't know if the costumes restricted her dancing or she was choosing not to dance as hard. It only in hindsight and in comparison to what im seeing now that its obvious she wasn't dancing as hard, though she was still good.

    2D064BDF00000578-0-image-a-116_1443813761446443341_08+246823+6JANET110215.JPG

I have theories on this as well, but I think her dance choices had less to do with the outfit. I’m guessing she was on an aggressive hormone regiment, and that affected her ability to move as she was accustomed to.

And of course the other side was all of the compromises... no curse words, limit on the provocative movements. Janet fought so hard to make her marriage work, and still try to keep a little bit of herself. So we were witnessing a lot of that on the Unbreakable Tour as well.

For Janet to have over 150 million streams for the year is really good.

Her best year so far in the streaming era. .

The thing with Janet’s music is that unlike some of her contemporaries, her streaming numbers are way down in part because a lot of kids didn’t grow up hearing her songs the same way they did Mariah’s or Whitney’s. That’s because of the industry blackout from 2004. Radio stations basically took her out of the mix of older hits they play. So lots of young folks really don’t know ANY of her catalog.

But what’s been kinda great to see is their reactions as they discover Janet. People really flip out when they start to realize how good she is (as many of us saw during #JanetJacksonAppreciationDay or the nearly viral spread of her ‘Would You Mind’ tour videos). Her streaming number continue to climb up now and I think that will bode well for her new music.

But whether she’s a streaming giant or not Janet and her team have been KILLING it on the publishing side for 2018. I’ve heard her music everywhere this year, from shopping in CVS, to RuPaul’s Drag Race to the all-Janet episode of Scandal. They came right in and secured those publishing bags for real. And while this 20 city short tour won’t make nearly as much as the first SOTW leg (due to mostly smaller venues), she’s still securing some hefty bags as the Essence, Panorama and Outside Lands headliner. Probably enough to offset any possible loss from the smaller shows.

Hoping that for her new music, she’ll do a world tour, start somewhere overseas, and end it here in the US.
