  1. #JanetJacksonAppreciationDay happened because of a confluence of factors... several folks on social media that launched a coordinated campaign. What was awesome was that it really caught on worldwide, as many of us hoped it would.

And of course, a HUGE part of that was a response to the NFL, and their seemingly tone deaf string of decisions.  For me, it wasn't directly about Justin Timberlake.

But the other factors were in the air. People see and understand the connections between Janet's career challenges and the current moments of reckoning through the #TimesUp and #MeToo movements.  As more and more in the younger generation discover and connect to her music, they too are upset at how she was blacklisted.  They see that her career suffered due to factors that she simply had nothing to do with.  And in this moment, things like what she endured are no longer acceptable in the entertainment industry.  Don't forget that exactly 1 week before the Super Bowl, you had that travesty at the Grammys where Lorde, the only woman nominated for Album Of The Year, was shut out from even being able to perform.  Then the President of the The Recording Academy saying the next day that if women want to be respected in the music industry, they need to "step up".  In the post SBXXXVIII Fallout, it was Janet that was disinvited from the Grammy Awards, while Justin went, and won that night.

All of these things were connected, and they were contributors to the movement's success.

  2. There's something to be said... for not saying anything.

"Fans declared Sunday #JanetJacksonAppreciationDay as a show of support of the singer who many feel was not supported by Timberlake after the pair's infamous 2004 halftime show. According to Spotify, the top five Janet Jackson songs streamed in the major bump were "That's The Way Love Goes" (up 126 percent), "Any Time, Any Place" (up 59 percent), "Rhythm Nation" (up 707 percent), "All For You" (up 413 percent), and "I Get Lonely" (up 97 percent)."

  3. On 1/2/2018 at 5:09 PM, State of the Game said:

I’m excited about Justin Timberlake’s new music and album!!!

He claims it’s deep but I hope it’s not country Tennessee shit but I’m still gonna buy it. This is the FIRST major release of 2018!!!!!

I remain a JT fan, but I'll just say I'm looking forward to it.  The lead single Filthy is ok, but nothing I'm going to rush around to get.  And I wish his camp would stop referring to it as some brand new sound because it's not.

  4. If Janet was really gonna take the tour overseas, why wouldn't she have hinted to picking the tour back up next year by now with a "see you guys next year with the 2nd leg of the tour" or something? Idk. Janet and her ppl sound very convincing as of now that this is THE END of the tour, not just the end of a leg of the tour.

I really do think that she and her team don't want to do that until they have all the dates and her personal situation worked out.  But one thing's for sure... the Europe leg of the tour should be easier for Janet in some ways because she'll be closer to her home base of London.  For the family and fans' sake, let's hope they can all work things out in short order.

In the meantime, let's also hope for some sort of SOTW DVD or Documentary which would help to sustain interest in the tour!!

  5. Well spotted. But it also says during a phone interview to promote Jackson’s tour that comes to Quicken Loans Arena at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 3.” Maybe the other one was a typo?

It literally could've been done in preparation for her original show, and they waited to run it until now, with a few updates.

I'm not seeing a problem here.

  6. It's probably gonna be Jimmy Jam.. Kelly tryna make us think it's gonna be Janet

I don't know... seems like the camp is getting ready to announce something.  And Kelly would be the perfect host to shepherd said announcement.

Whoever it is, I'm a gonna tune in!!!  #StartPlanningBitches  #GilSaidItNotMe

  7. You and I both know she is not doing any festivals or promo for that matter. I agree that it’s a good idea as well, but we all know it won’t happen.

Who knows?? All I know is that Janet is amazing.  The fact that she's doing so much... both touring and taking care of Lil E is incredible to me.

And hey... awards season is just getting started.  I'm sure some big things are coming up for Ms. Jackson and the JanFam.

  8. I get the arguments against Janet playing bigger venues, but she's in a precarious position when it comes to touring.  Janet is a global superstar... she's got fans in every market.  But figuring our how many fans will show to a concert is never an easy task, especially for an artist that has been out of the spotlight, or has a spotty record of consistently performing dates.  Is it possible to have a massive "sell-out" run by playing a bunch of theaters??  Sure, but that means a ton more shows per market and a more taxing time on the artist and performers, for smaller albeit enthusiastic crowds.  The other option?  Go for arenas and even if you can't sell out, power through the show and keep your commitments.  Then the next time, fans will know that the tour is happening, because they heard from their friends how EPIC you were the last time.  As long as you can make enough to cover your operating costs, this is the strategy that tends to be the best.

What I love about SOTW is that it is about as lean and mean as an artist of Janet's caliber could get away with on a tour, yet it totally does the job.  She's not spending tons of money on elaborate sets, a bunch of costume changes or pyro/ effects.  Which means those savings can be applied to other areas.

How much is Janet spending on operating expenses?? My rough estimate based on what some of the more expensive arena tours tend to cost...

10k to secure the date for a venue,

20-40k to rent the venue on performance day

20k to pay for the venue's staff.

100k per performance = pay, living costs for the tour staff

30-50k some sort of cut to LiveNation, possibly paid beforehand to guarantee the tour.

    Total operating expenses = $200k

So if that rough estimate were true, that means that the venues where ticket sales were lower would still be net money makers for Janet, even if they didn't make a bunch.  It's quite possible that Janet cleared $100k or more profit from a show where the house was 50% full.

At the same time, she gets a chance to test out her best performing markets JUST IN CASE there is a tour re-vamp around new music for 2018.   I suspect that if there is an international SOTW leg in early 2018, it might be followed up by a 20-30 date trek around North America which would see near full to sold out at every venue.

  9. We know new music is on its way very soon but what we don’t know is if it’ll be a completely new album or just a new song(s) to hold us over until her next album! I know we’re all excited for a new era/new music from Janet, especially since “Unbreakable” was such a triumphant return to form! But do you think Janet’s next album will hold up? Will it be an even better album since A LOT has changed since then? Here are my Expectations/Speculations over her next album!

    1) Motherhood-Now that Janet is officially a Momma, we know there will be some songs centered around that, if not the album’s main theme.

    2) More Socially Conscious Songs-I think Janet should once again take it further with her social commentary on modern day society. I say she takes the concept of State of the World Tour and reinvents it with more messages about police brutality against minorities, corrupt justice system, white supremacy, mass shootings, etc.

    3) A New Sound-Janet experimented a lot with “Unbreakable” by not conforming much to modern day music expectations. She kept it old school with a contemporary twist by only dabbling with some new age sounding music here and there. I want Janet to explore other genres of music again, but also keeping that mix of old school Janet meets new school.

    4) Open up about her marriage/divorce-We know the obligatory "ex" song is coming and considering how there's a chance those domestic abuse rumors might be true about Wissam, it will be interesting to see how she delivers a song about the falling out of that relationship.

    5) A 2018 release date-3 years after "Unbreakable" seems like enough time for a new album and for Janet have recorded it in time for possibly a spring release?? We a possible European leg of her tour; it would be a great platform to promote the album with some new song incorporated into the show.

    6) Album Title/Happier Janet-Lastly, I hope we hear a happier Janet on her next album as she seems to be in a very good place now and I know whatever the album is called, it will definitely be about where she is in her like now....maybe "New Again"? "Maternal Wounds?'

But what are your guys expectations/speculations over a possible new album soon?? :)

I've been wondering much of the same!! One of the best sources for potential clues is an interview Kelly Alexander did with Jimmy Jam.  A few reminders--

    a.  When asked about the tour preparation, Jimmy did go out of his way to say that they and Janet don't have to "gear up" for a project. They just go in the studio, and make it happen.  "Nowadays we just kind of hit the ground running".

    b. Then Jimmy talks about getting late night calls from Janet and Eissa.  He remarks that Janet's newfound place as a parent "inspires what I think are great musical ideas, hopefully the come out that way."

    c. Kelly follows up, asking if there is time for new music along with the tour.  Jimmy says "Will we have time?  Yes because we make time... we know what to do, we know how to do it... there's no learning curve or anything like that anymore."

The interview was published back in June. Very subtle, but definitely indicating that some new music is ready to drop.

  10. Cute idea but ain't happening. Janet barely doing Europe. Let's be real

I was looking up and I seriously hope Janet is considering taking this tour to Europe and beyond.

It's easy to forget how huge Janet is in countries like Japan and South Africa.  I was just looking at this today.

Here are Janet's Number 1 hits in Japan (a total of 8)...

TTWLG, GTIG, Together Again, Doesn't Really Matter, All For You, STCML, Just A Little While, Feedback

Number 1 hits in South Africa (a total of 9)...

Let's Wait Awhile, Miss You Much, Come Back To Me, SOTW, TTWLG, If, GTIG, Together Again, All For You

Surely someone in her camp is thinking about all of this.  Why would Janet do put all of this incredible work into SOTW and not want to take it around the globe.  It's a global message!!  And BTW... can anyone on here confirm whether or not Scream was a Number 1 hit in South Africa?? I can't find the info anywhere.
