Grammy Award winner Ashanti has plenty to sing about, but today, the release of her new single “Let’s Go” marks a unique contribution to social consciousness, health behavior and the power of music and fan participation. In her latest collaboration with First Lady Michelle Obama’s Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA), the singer, songwriter and actress has joined forces to help encourage people to consume more water. Drink Up, launched in 2013 by PHA, is yet another component of the effort to address the health care problems of our nation’s youth and to highlight for families, the importance of positive health behaviors.

Via social media influence and the hashtag #DrinkUpAshanti, the artist’s new single and music video of “Let’s Go” will evolve from low-tech quality into a sharper sound and video experience as the hashtag “donations” (fans’ tweets and Instagram posts) rise and “hydrate” the content. Aggregated fan tweets will be used to create flowers featured on the morphing music video. And fans will be able to see the impact of their tweets on the video via DrinkUpAshanti.com. Once the song is “fully hydrated” by hashtag activity (the clarity will fill in and become more brilliant as the hashtag traffic increases), “Let’s Go” will be released for sale on iTunes.

“With their hard work and creativity, groups like Drink Up have encouraged people across the country to drink more water, and they have helped increase demand for—and sales of—healthier products,” said First Lady Michelle Obama. “From talking fountains to surfing competitions and now through partnerships with artists like Ashanti, Drink Up is proving that if we promote healthier options in fun and exciting ways, and make those options affordable and accessible for families, we can continue to make the healthy choice the easy choice.”
