19th Annual Black Hall of Fame Ceremony to be held in Little Rock

Little Rock, Ark. (KTHV) -- The Arkansas Black of Hall of Fame (ABHOF) will hold its 19th annual ceremony in Little Rock Saturday.

The event will honor six native Arkansans who've made premarkable professional and civic achievements.

This year's honorees include Derek Fisher, five-time NBA champion and starting point guard for the Los Angeles Lakers; Joseph "Joe" Jackson, patriarch/manager of the first family of music (The Jackson 5, Michael Jackson, and Janet Jackson); Abraham Carpenter, Sr. and family, entrepreneurs/agricultural pioneers; Dr. Robert L. Williams, educator and author; Kathryn Hall-Trujillo, maternal and child health pioneer; and Leo "Jocko" Carter, urban radio pioneer.

The gala will begin with a reception at 6:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 7:30 p.m. in the Wally Allen Ballroom of the Statehouse Convention Center in downtown Little Rock.

There will be a pre-event reception held at the governor's mansion with Governor Mike Beebe expected to attend.

Charles Stewart, chairman of the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame says the 2011 gala continues the tradition of honoring an exceptional group of Arkansas natives.

"We are proud to induct this year's nominees into the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame and anticipate the same overwhelming response and support from the community that we've always been fortunate enough to receive," he said.

The annual induction ceremony is the primary fundraiser for the Black Hall of Fame.

The foundation aims to provide grants to charitable endeavors in the black community in the areas of youth development, health and wellness, education, and business/economic development.

Since 2004, the foundation has invested more than $300,000 in black and other underserved communities in Arkansas.

These grants have benefited communities in 45 counties across the state.
