How is your relationship with your parents?

Excuse my ignorance on culture, but can you give us an example?

I'm not sure what customs the Pakistanis use..

Without going into detail:

I wasn't allowed to socialise with girls

I wasn't allowed to go to parties unless the inviter was a Muslim

I wasn't allowed to invite friends over unless they were Asian

I wasn't allowed to go to friends houses unless they were Asian

I wasn't allowed to go out to the cinema/shopping at all unless it was with family members

After school I had to go to Mosque so I couldn't take part in extra-curricular activities at school

We weren't allowed to listen to secular music [unless it was a Jackson]

We weren't even allowed to watch certain tv shows because they were too 'western' :sigh:

We still did some stuff though without our parents knowing, especially listening to music :filenails:. When i finally went to uni I finally got some freedom and that's when I started to "come to terms" with my bisexuality.

The sad part is that Islam does not say I can't do any of those things that I was not allowed to do. It's the backwards outdated traditions of that part of the world that said I can't do it.

so he agrees with the doctrine of his religion?

Well I like guys too so my religion won't like me. But I only eat halal meat, I don't drink and other stuff too. Religion gave me some great values but I wonder how I would have been had I grown up in a non-religious household.

It's true. My parents loved MJ and Janet. In the South asian community it was the same for a lot of people - they weren't allowed to listen to music unless it was a Jackson, Elvis or a Beatle.

it's hard to explain

It's interesting Bu, your upbringing was a lil similar to a few of the Jehovah's Witnesses I knew, and the overly strict christian friends. I had friends (these 3 sisters) who were allowed to ONLY listen to Gospel, and I man for real, they thought Mary Mary and Kirk Franklin were like hardcore, NO LIE they thought Whitney & Mariah were tools of "The Devil" to get good church girls like them in with their gospel music and then turn them into ho's with their secular music.... Anyway, they could only go over friends houses that not only went to the same church as them but were officially baptized, and they could only interact in schools with other students that were Christian, which I was at the time. Here's the best part, 1 of the sisters turned out normal, 1 got pregnant way early, and  1 was a stripper and nude model before getting re-baptized and is now annoying and over the top and a major judging evangelist.

It's really interesting to see how a kid who was raised SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO strictly turns out as a adult in the modern world, and Bu tho we haven't met face to face, judging from more than plenty conversation, I'd say you were 1 of the better adjusted ones
