  1. Literally nothing discussed on a musical artist's message board is "that deep." However, since that's what we do here, and since that dance moment is arguably the most iconic in her entire career, I believe it's worth a small discussion.  That better for you?  :P

  2. Back in '89, '90 and '91, she and Janet were the two big rivals, in my opinion.  I was in J's corner, and I always wanted her to beat Paula at everything.  My friends and I would argue over who was better.  Looking back now, obviously Janet's work was MUCH more groundbreaking and the music was better quality.  At the time, though, I did really love Paula deep down - totally fun and could dance up a damn storm.

  3. I bet it hurt her...just a lil bit lol

oh it DEFINITELY did. Hahahaha. I honestly think she detests Janet, and always has, because she was jealous that she couldn't compete with her performance abilities.

Female celebs like Madonna are why people are always trying to put women against each other.  It's a shame.

  4. I was 18 and had just moved to college.  I was already a super fan, though (had been since I was 10 or 11), so that's why I was kind of felt let down at first.  I do still remember rushing out and buying TVR, opening up the booklet for the first time as "The Velvet Rope" track started playing.  I instantly fell in love with the entire project - the music ("sonic bed" as Jimmy Jam put it), the images, the message, the groove.  But I still skipped GTIG for a while. LOL

  5. I remember not appreciating this song when it first came out.  I guess I was just wanting that banging single from Janet.  However, over the years it became one of my favorites.  Those muted chords at the beginning and throughout, the beat, there's just so many understated layers to its production.  Love.

  6. Control was quite a breakthrough into the music industry and was Janet's personal announcement to the pop world that she had arrived.  But Rhythm Nation, the album and the song, transcended just being great pop / R&B / dance music, and went to another level of "cultural significance" because of the message, the hard-hitting production and the ground-breaking choreography, which still exists today on a plane all its own.  No other dance artist since has attempted to touch it.  MTV had the RN "mini-movie" on repeat for what seemed like 2 or 3 years.

  7. I feel like The Voice has rendered a remake of AI irrelevant.   I am very often floored by the level of raw talent on there.  I'd buy several of the top 10's albums right now just based on their vocal abilities alone.

  8. I'm meh on all these, actually.  STCML was not performed well, IMO, on the AFY tour.  Of those, State of the World is a given, and I think would be quite good.  Enjoy might not be bad.

My personal wish would be "Tonight's the Night."  I know it's way obscure for the general public (at least her version), and would never be on a set list, but I think it would be beautiful to hear her sing it live.  It's one of my faves.  I also wish she'd do What'll I Do again.  Great vocals in that one and a fun song!

  9. Lol, you said "by that logic Shania Twain..." my point is: no - that logic has nothing to do with Shania Twain or anyone BUT Janet Jackson...her behavior patters, her words about her music, & her there track record.

Janet hasn't cared what you got out of Someone to Call My Lover - she has not performed it because of past things  maybe it will change but it would be abnormal for her if it did

All artists do not operate the same or off the same principle that's what makes them different.

I personally think you assume a lot about how Janet may or may not tick.  I used another artist, but there are many, to shed light on how other song writers that write love songs typically "reinvent" them for different times in their lives. You simply put out baseless theories you dreamed up. Just saying. Anyway, not worth a silly argument. Just discussing.

  10. Shania Twain is not Janet Jackson. We're talking about consistent behaviors and answers Janet has given about music that seemed to be about her exs. She's never performed Go Deep since VR, she didn't perform Twenty Fourplay, she's avoided Someone to Call My Lover.

It would be nice if she changed this method but it's been pretty consistent to JANET's personality. This has nothing to do with artists in general.

what's your point ?  Janet is not Shania, shania is not janet.  Buy artists are artists, song writers are song writers.

  11. But Take Me Away is about Wissam & them being in love & him "taking her away" from all the other bs.

By that logic, Shania Twain would never sing You're Still the One or From This Moment On since they were written with her husband who left her for her best friend.  Lives change, but human emotions transfer to new people sometimes.  Take Me Away, at least parts of it, can certainly have multiple meanings as well.

  12. Any new music is something to be excited about, especially if it's from the Unbreakable sessions.  Good stuff.

My GUESS would be that "Take Me Away" would be included on the new tour set list because, let's be honest, with the current "state of the world," who the hell hasn't thought those very words to themselves?  Even without Janet's song in mind.  I know I have on the daily.   Also, from previous work, I could maybe see New Agenda being tossed in there for good measure.

She could really do (and I honestly hope she does do) several other Unbreakable songs.  I know the casual fan won't want to hear a lot of the new stuff, but I just think it's important to have Should have Known Better (preferably directly after Rhythm Nation), Black Eagle and Gon' Be Alright (nice positive closer, perhaps).

  13. "Salvage the era"?  Are you talking about the tour, or the album?  Unbreakable went to Number 1 and gave Janet her 40 Hot 100 hit and longest running Number 1 on any genre chart with No Sleep.  Sure it wasn't a million-seller but let's not get confused and say the album wasn't successful.

But let's be clear about chart expectations going forward.  Now that all of the charts rely so heavily on streaming, it's going to be tough for artists like Janet to have the chart success that you see from folks like Ariana Grande or Harry Styles.  Janet's fans don't spend every waking moment on social media trying to boost her YouTube and Spotify plays.  On today's Billboard charts, that's how you get to "Number 1" absent a monumental sales week.

And even when limited to Streaming, there's a lot of inequality built into the Billboard Charts.  Remember how the Dammn Baby video took over Facebook, yet it missed the Hot 100 entirely?  It's because it's YouTube views were low, and Billboard doesn't count Facebook video views into it's streaming data.  The only plays that matter to them are Spotify, YouTube, Apple Music and a few other services.  They don't count Tidal either.

Unbreakable is my favorite Janet album, and I personally would love to see a re-release.  But don't expect it to garner some huge chart position.  From that front, Janet would be better off doing an album or an EP, then combine with a new video and some lead-up promotion.

I couldn't care less about her marketing campaign or exposure at radio. We live in a different world now than 2001.  Just give me quality music written and performed from the heart, like Unbreakable.  This album fed my soul. That's all the matters to me.
