Music Performance

-Vocal Ability - her vocal ability is a lot stronger than ppl assume. Her voice is deathly thin, and her upper register doesn't have much power, but her vocal registration is superb. She has a good ear for her voice and she knows what sounds good and what doesn't. She doesn't write her melodies with much range because she understands that her voice isn't her bread and butter. There's only a handful of songs that she's written that go beyond C5. Her vocal transitions between registers is good. She knows how to manipulate her voice to give it different textures. She sings better than a lot of these so-called "singers".

-Song Quality - The reviews don't lie. When she's on her shit, her song quality is really good. When she's doing stuff to fit in (20YO) it's usually a hit and miss. It strikes me odd how she doesn't have any songs on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs, but her songs have ranked elsewhere. Songs like RN, Nasty, TTWLG, TA, You, WA, TAT, among others are the reason why she gets compared favorably to the likes of Michael, Madonna, Prince, Stevie Wonder, and gets likened to Marvin Gaye.

-Artistic Growth - Janet's artistic growth is perfection. What has helped her is her autobiographical artistry. This is why her musical evolution has been mimicked by the likes of Britney, Aaliyah, Brandy, and countless others. Control is the beginning of a new life for teenagers around the world in the ages of 17-21. By the time young adults graduate from college, they feel like they can change the world, dive into social issues trying to make an impact, etc hence RN1814. By the late 20s, most ppl are thinking about settling down and having children. It is then when ppl start to explore sex in depth, in walks janet. The 30s are when most adults experience their mid-life crisis, and repressed memories from childhood begin to resurface and consume our lives with unresolved issues. We then look into ourselves and we have our Velvet Rope moments. Once dealt with the past, we come to a point where we just stop giving two shits and a flying fuck about what anyone thinks about us. People do whatever they want and don't look back. Thus we have AFY. Post AFY, people realize they learn so much about themselves and we have DJ. A this point, Janet's artistic growth begins to wear thin. We'll have to see with the next album where she is.

Dance Performance

-Dance Ability - It kinda goes without saying. When it comes to dance, it's Janet, and then everybody else. The only person that should be compared to Janet when it comes to dancing is Michael. Anyone else is just an insult.

-Artistic Growth/Evolution - She has grown considerably as a dancer. The choreography from the early Control era videos don't require much technique and aren't very intricate. But they set the stage, and give Janet a foundation. With PP, we see where Janet is headed as a dancer, and the choreography of that video can be seen as a segue into the RN1814 era of dancing. Janet's dancing became far more intricate and complex. She understands, at this point, the importance of using dance as a form of expression, rather than an aesthetic. Dance, for Janet, then became a means of conveying a message, and that is executed well in videos like RN, TA, and the videos of the janet. era. By 1993, Janet became a juggernaut in dance, and she began to incorporate different styles. If you watch the "Throb" performance from SNL, there are elements of voguing, hip-hop, African tribal dance, jazz, lyrical, and other styles of dance. By the 2000s, Janet's dancing style became more technical. Speed, agility, execution, transitions, and versatility became the most prominent characteristics of Janet's dancing style.

-Signature Move(s) - anytime any artist does any type of military dancing, it's automatically Janet inspired.

-Personal Style/Evolution - Poor gal. We won't get on personal style, because we all know Janet be looking a whole mess sometimes. ohboy.gif But her style has changed, and it reflects where she is in her life. She wore black all thru the RN1814 era to show that in complete darkness we are all the same, it is only our knowledge and wisdom that separates us. The janet. era was full of neutral colors, nothing to strong, nothing to bold, very subtle which reflects her Hollywood sweet girl persona. TVR era was full of dark colors, for the obvious reason. Red was the most prominent color which was used to symbolize pain and at the same time strength. AFY was colorful, bright colors to illustrate happiness, hence why all the videos from that era are so colorful. Right now, she's serving the girls with high fashion because she now realizes that she IS the shit and she's getting older. So dressing more refined and high end is what works for her.

-Influences - I don't think Janet has ever spoken on her fashion influences, but she has named Christian Loubuton, Louis Vuitton, and Alexander McQueen as some of her favorite designers.

-Manufactured vs Authenticity - Pure authenticity. Nothing about her image is created in a lab.

Live Performance (Touring, etc.)

-Live Vocal or Lip-Synch? She does both. But as a late, she's been slaying the lip-sync game. The RN1814 tour is live for the most part. All of her tours are somewhat live, but she does have her moments when lipping is necessary. There's nothing wrong with lipping as long as you're dancing your ass off.

-Theatrics - Janet's theatrics are always on point imo. She understands the importance of visual artistry, and she spoke about this in Billboard 2008. When she's creating a song, she's also thinking about how she can do the song live. Watch RN from TVRT, or the medleys from the previous tours.

-Stage Presence - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRBf7uq2F_g#t=4m15s http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDgAIn6MpPY (who else can make the honorees give you a standing ovation at THEIR tribute?) :coffee:

Music Video

-Breakthrough Video - Nasty, this is the video that made MJ cry.

-Most Memorable Video - Rhythm Nation

-Worst Video - Nothing.

Awards and Achievements

-Album Sales - Over 36 million albums sold in the US based on press releases, RIAA, and Soundscan; worldwide sales are over 100 million. Also, might I point out that Janet is one of three women to have sold over 100 million albums. Whitney and Tina are the only other two. She is also one of only three Black women to have an album sell 20 million copies. Whitney's first two albums along with The Bodyguard and Private Dancer by Tina are the only others (I believe).

-Awards (Grammy's, AMA's, VMA's, etc.) 5 Grammys plus the Governor's Award, 14 AMAs, the second most for a Black female. 9 VMAs, the most for a Black female. 34 Billboard Awards, the most of any artist. 12 Soul Train Awards, also the most for any artist. She's the youngest female to receive BMI's Songwriter of the Year. She has the top honor from the VMAs, the AMAs, the Grammys, the WMAs, the RMAs, he BMAs, the TMF Awards, GLAAD, the STAs (Soul Train), and more on the way. Her range of awards/nominations - R&B, pop, dance, rock, and hip-hop - are a testament of her versatility as a music artist, and helps to explain why she's respected in not only those genres, but others as well. She has made history at countless award shows. Most nominations from one album with Control. Most BMAs from one album with RN1814. First woman of color to be nominated for the Producer of the Year Grammy. First Black female artist to be nominated for Best Original Song at the Academy Awards. The first Black woman to receive the VMAs Video Vanguard Award. Second black woman to receive the AMAs Award of Merit. The list really goes on for a while.

-Chart Success - Her chart success is unmatched by any Black female. She is Billboard's most successful R&B female of the hot 100 era. She is the 5th most successful R&B artist on the R&B chart (I still question her ranking :umm:). Second most #1s on the dance chart, and #1 among Black artists. 10 #1s on the Hot 100, 16 #1s on the R&B chart, 19 #1s on the dance chart, 8 #1 Airplay hits, 27 total top ten hits on the Hot 100, 30 total top tens on the R&B chart, 25 total top 10 airplay hits. I could go on about her chart accomplishments if need be.

-Recognition :filenails:

Icon? - Icon, legend, pioneer, immortal goddess, originator, innovator, etc. The list goes on.

What Norm and Austin said along with "She made the Jackson language more noticable", "She's probably the only artist that could have gotten away with whispering an entire album", "To this day she's the only artist that has an ad lib that listeners (including herself)doesn't know what she said" and so on...
