Gay rights?

If hiv/aids didn't exist would gay rights have progressed further in the 80's? or was the disease a necessary evil to highlight issues in the gay community? (I know hiv/aids isn't a gay disease either so no need to reply with that)

Nope. They would have just found something else to be mad about. haters are haters are haters.

don't most ppl still till this day connect HIV with being gay? If anything gays are still blamed for the disease

Yeah I don't think its fair... but at the time it mostly affected gay men I believe... I watched this special on netflix a few weeks ago on gay sex in the 70's.... all of those orgies and people having unprotected sex... towards the end of that decade I believe thats when it hit hard...

I always wondered if the government had something to do with it though...

From my understanding, Gay rights were just starting to become a hot topic in the mid 70s, and many people felt like it would be the social movement of the near future (which it kinda was). However, when AIDS hit, I think the movement had to shift focus from civil rights, to social and medical awareness. We couldn't focus on gay marriage in the 80s because we were trying to make then president Regan admit that there was an epidemic killing thousands of people. he wouldn't even utter the words HIV/AIDS. Plus the disease itself killed off a generation of young artist, activist and intellectuals. It also forced a lot of gays back in the closet. So to answer your question, yes I think AIDS took the wind out of the sail of the gay rights in terms of civil rights. But on another level it actually united the community around a singular cause.

Well said... I kinda got that feeling too... Do you think the government made it? Because of the social movement that was taking place to slow it down?

I don't think so I think if HIV was not a factor all those gay men with all that history and experience fighting back would be around to at least set an example you can fuck but fuck for a cause, I mean back in the 70's and early 80's it was a fuck free for all, I mean everyone was a "Nuk" getting knocked up like a teen HS drop out with big tits. I think progress could have been made but HIV made gays a reason to hate on beyond the sex

I hope you joking because you too old to think that random sex means someone loves you. Thats not love thats lust... love is when someone is there for you thru the good times or bad not about how many nuts you can spit on their back.

I have no clue. But I've always found it weird that no one could pin point its inception. I've always suspected that there were cases of it before the 80s but they were never reported or thoroughly documented. But in all honesty, if it was revealed that it was made in a lab by a scientist, I wouldn't be the least surprised.
