One Direction Nets Rare Pair of No. 1s in a Year

One Direction's arrival atop the Billboard 200 albums chart this week with "Take Me Home" marked the second No. 1 for the act in less than a year. It follows "Up All Night," which also bowed at No. 1 on the list dated March 31.

With a pair of No. 1s on the Billboard 200 in less than a year's time, One Direction joins an elite group of acts that have managed the feat. Earlier this year, Justin Bieber did it with "Believe" (July 7), which was preceded eight months earlier by "Under the Mistletoe" (Nov. 19, 2011).

We scrolled through the Billboard 200's archives, back to when the chart started using Nielsen SoundScan sales data on May 25, 1991, to see how many other acts have managed the feat. Turns out, since the chart was revolutionized that year with SoundScan's point-of-sale purchase information, only 17 acts have scored a pair of No. 1s albums in a year.

Garth Brooks and the Beatles took it a step even further: they each claimed three No. 1s in 12 months' time.

That said, here's a look at all of the acts that reached No. 1 with two different albums for the first time within a year on the Billboard 200 chart in the SoundScan era (May 1991-present).

Three No. 1 Albums in a Year:

- Garth Brooks ("Sevens," Dec. 13, 1997; "The Limited Series," May 23, 1998 and "Double Live," Dec. 5, 1998)

- The Beatles (The three volumes of the "Anthology" series: Dec. 9, 1995; April 6, 1996 and Nov. 16, 1996)

Two No. 1 Albums in a Year:

- Jay-Z (He's claimed a pair of No. 1s in a year five separate times)

- Justin Bieber (three times)

- 2Pac (twice)

- DMX (twice)

- Kenny Chesney (twice)

- All with one pairing each: Garth Brooks again (this time with 1992's "The Chase" and 1993's "In Pieces"), Susan Boyle, Hootie & the Blowfish, Ja Rule, Jonas Brothers, R. Kelly, Lil Wayne, Master P, One Direction, George Strait and System of a Down.
