One Direction Aiming for Historic No. 1 on Billboard 200 Chart

One Direction could be on the way to making history on the Billboard 200 albums chart next week.

Industry sources suggest the vocal quintet's "Up All Night" may sell between 160,000 and 180,000 copies by the end of the tracking week on March 18.

That sum could be enough to snag a No. 1 bow -- and it would mark the first U.K. group in history to debut at No. 1 with its first album.

Adele's "21" set may also sell around 150,000 to 160,000 -- so that album could block One Direction from No. 1 and make a return to the top (for a 24th week!).

While many U.K. groups have hit No. 1 ( Coldplay, the Beatles, Spice Girls, Depeche Mode and so on), none have -- so far -- opened atop the list with their first release.

The new Billboard 200 chart's top 10 will be revealed on the morning of Wednesday, March 21.

Formed on the 2010 edition of the U.K.'s "X Factor" TV program, One Direction comprises Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson. All of the group hails from the U.K., save for Horan, who is from Ireland. The act has nabbed three top three U.K. singles and reached No. 2 with its debut album "Up All Night" in November 2011.

Back on the U.S. charts, "Up All Night's" lead single "What Makes You Beautiful" climbs from No. 50 to No. 44 this week on the Billboard Hot 100. It debuted at No. 28 three weeks ago. So far, the song has sold 338,000 downloads in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.
