  1. It's too bad the album is so shitty next to Miseducation and Under Construction.
  2. She looks really good... from afar. Up close
  3. Taylor, SuBo and Rihanna are still owning! What's up with Katy's random surge? And I am so shocked and happy for Mariah. I thought it would drop like a rock; I guess the holiday season is actually working and it will go Gold after all.
  4. I like this. The beat is way more interesting than Airplanes/LTWYL. Alex Da Kid did good. Christina is trying for that Sarah McLachlan sound in the intro. Very pretty.
  5. Janet Lauryn Hill But there are some that are very close, such as: Madonna Michael Jackson Aimee Mann Robyn Lily Allen (I don't have her debut in full ) Air
  6. By virtue of being from the '80s, his stuff doesn't sound like it could be released today, production-wise. But I'm talking about melodies and hooks and universal appeal. And I'm also talking about how his production sounds WAY better than that of other '80s pop stars. The arrangement, though, is what is timeless. Don't look at the music in such a shallow way.
  7. I came into this thread thinking that he wasn't, but I've changed my mind. In my opinion, anybody who can write as many memorable, timeless, catchy, elegant, pleasing melodies and hooks as he did is a genius. He is a pop music genius. His shit songs would be amazing for other people. I'm not a stan--my love for him isn't in the same galaxy as my love for Janet--but I always enjoy hearing him in my headphones. I like all of his albums. His singles are mind-numbing in their sheer excellence. There have been very few people to be as consistent as he was, ever. He didn't grow very much, but that's not necessary for genius. The greatest of the greats usually fell off after their peaks too... nobody can get better forever. (See Prince.) His genius is in itself his pop sensibility. That extends to his vocals too. The way he wrapped his voice around a song was beautiful. Edit for adds. I was going to add something before I read up and noticed that Austin basically hit it. What I'M saying is that there is no measure of genius. That was the point in writing that growth isn't necessary for musical genius. In music, you can be a genius in many ways. You don't have to be all-encompassing.
  8. I think so. I'm a virgin but I'm young. I'm not gonna be a whore, but I'm gonna be passionate in my love-making. How Janet would want it.
  9. Bich You know how it was a top 5 hit in Canada? I was on a California teen tour with a bunch of Canadian kids in 2008, and we were at some dance on one of the last nights, so I requested that the DJ play "Feedback." Everyone went NUTS. That's really why I posted it.
  10. I wish they would stop acting like a #1 song on iTunes Videos is a #1 hit. It gives me secondhand embarrassment.

  12. Right I'm interested in seeing where GaGa's career goes because she has so much potential. But so far she's only gotten odder--less fun and more into herself. She says what she does is art but the symbolism behind it is always very literal. She panders to younger angsty gays who don't have the confidence to fend for themselves. And she keeps recycling the same silly stage props over and over. :tsk: You know what would REALLY shock people? GaGa in jeans with a mic and a guitar player. And a dash of humility. I appreciate her support for the gay community, though. Many people like to paint her as a villainess who takes advantage of fags all over the globe. While she clearly does it in part to sow a lifelong fanbase and for media attention, the fact that she does it at all is good enough for me. We need as many vocal supporters as we can get.
  13. I think GaGa is more over-the-top ridiculous. She makes everything a little CORNY and campy. The whole paws up monsters thing? Madonna never crossed that line. She was always more pretentious, more cool and composed. She would never let her fans know that she loves them and that's why we love her. GaGa puts on a facade of outspokenness, but behind the flaming pianos and heel-less platform shoes, the message she's pushing is not nearly as divisive or bold as the things Madonna used to say. That goes for music as well which of course GaGa is very new in and her efforts are no more generic than Madonna's early records were.
