Easier said than done, obviously, with how many hurtful things have been said but in the long run it will be better for both of you. People only go so far to get a reaction out of the other. It's advice to "fit in"/be popular/gain respect. It's not advice to be critical, as in objective It's advice to selectively choose when to fit in. i.e. when to show ur true thoughts/opinions, and when not to. There is no other explanation for it.
