Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Announcement: No Janet Jackson

N.W.A. IN AND JANET JACKSON BLOCKED: ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME GETS IT RIGHT

It was expected that Janet Jackson would be the first choice for one of the nominees, but music fans should be thankful she was ignored. Let’s face it: Janet Jackson’s comeback campaign has been underwhelming, and it’s not because she didn’t deliver; Unbreakable is one of the best albums of the year. However, the way Janet’s comeback was handled should force the singer to fire her PR team and management.

Instead of concentrating on Janet’s strengths, which she still has, we were given articles, most likely influenced by her PR team, on how Janet is more important than Madonna, how Janet Jackson is aging better than Madonna, and how Madonna needs to learn about comebacks from Janet. Given the fact that Madonna’s tour is selling far better than Janet’s (Some of Janet’s small dates haven’t even sold out, and others, for peculiar reasons, haven’t even been reported) and her album is outselling Janet’s (Rebel Heart has sold 850,000 copies worldwide — underwhelming, but better than the 350,000 copies Unbreakable has sold), Janet’s PR team has made Ms. Jackson look desperate.

When you have to prop up a star by diminishing the achievements of another, things don’t look right. The journalists who participated in this unethical marketing campaign may have (nobody knows for sure) received a lot of cash and other freebies, but hurt Janet’s chances of getting into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Voters needed to be reminded of Janet’s legacy (which she has), her sometimes amazing music (Velvet Rope is one of the best albums ever made), and her wild performances (just do a YouTube search). Instead, they remember an unethical and sexist marketing campaign in which another female singer was tarnished in order for Janet to look relevant. This isn’t the 1980s anymore, and we don’t need to pit two women against each other.

In terms of album sales, Unbreakable fell apart as soon as albums were “bundled” in with t-shirts and even Uber rides (the $3.50 “service charge” is what is needed for Billboard to count an album as a sale). Janet Jackson is actually above all of this and, after reassessing her current team, will hopefully get into the Hall of Fame next year. By contrast, N.W.A. deserves their entry this year. No, they are not the first thing people think of when they hear the term “Rock and Roll,” but they represent everything “Rock and Roll” is about: rebelliousness, social activism, talent, and influence. It’s not that Janet doesn’t have these qualities. However, N.W.A. constantly reminded us of these qualities this year. Of course, they also had the movie Straight Outta Compton to help their marketing campaign. But we weren’t pushed with think-pieces on how N.W.A. is more relevant than the Beastie Boys or how Run D.M.C. could learn from N.W.A. Instead, we became more familiar with what made and what still makes N.W.A. great.

Even though Janet Jackson didn’t get in the Hall of Fame this year, she should still be happy about her nomination. Other influential female singers such as Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey haven’t even been nominated. Janet Jackson’s first step into guaranteeing a place in the Hall of Fame next year should be to denounce all the think pieces condemning other female singers in order to explain why Ms. Jackson was robbed of inclusion this year.

You are so messy. I hate to like you

But women are always pitted together in comparison to men. It's never Usher v Justin Timberlake or MJ v Elvis... The industry and its fans will ALWAYS pit two of the top tier women artists together and I don't see that changing anytime soon. Is it right? No but it sure builds conversation

Minaj vs. shitty female rappers

Britney vs. shitty pop stars who wish they were her

Adele vs every female singer from around the first worlds

you get the point

Janet's merits stand on their own. When you compare, you start to see the shortcomings of others. The R&R HOF committee saw these articles. Not to mention, Jimmy retweeting them. :sigh:

If Janet wants to get in, she'll dress up the 30th anniversary of Control and she'll lead a campaign that started it all. Let that be the building block of the campaign. She'll have a better chance of getting in. Write articles that focus on Janet and how Janet impacted the world.

You know for a fact they read Jimmy Jam tweets and ThatOddFan's articles?

You're a wise one Austin. Why don't you create a brand and use your intelliect to boost Janet's chances?

I could create a whole campaign just based off the 30th anniversary of Control. But that would require cooperation and dedication from the artist in question. But said artist can't even be bothered to promote her own album, so why waste my time?

Madge came off more desperate but she was in it for the long haul and it is perceived as a legitimate era. Everyone already forgot about Unbreakable, not that that many people were talking about it because she really didn't promote it.

But whatever who cares. :coffee:

Unbreakable is for the fans and we did NOT forget about it. YOU did not forget about it... It was literally 2 months ago

I can't....look folks, Janet Jackson's legacy is already cemented. I believe she's content with her accomplishments and doesn't require comparison to any other star. We compare females out of sexism, males dont suffer the same amount of criticism nor backlash. I dont believe anyone can complain about a "campaign" that didnt exist, the only articles I read concerned touring and showmanship, the fact two high profile acts were touring at the same time isn't new for either one of them, its happen many times now. As a die hard fan of Janet Jackson, I love her because of her entertaining, humanitarian efforts, and sense of dignity and humility.

Gurl not Janet with that child labour :coffee:

Those American children are making $2,000/show according to TMZ Unlike those former Apple employees Madonna hired

It's clear a campaign has to be done with participation from the artist. Janet trying to let her merits speak for themselves isn't working. Deep down, she does care, and wants to be inducted. If Janet and/or her team would cooperate, I'd be more than happy to run the campaign.

When Madonna got inducted she was coming off the heels of Confessions and on Hard Candy. She nor her fans were concerned about anyone else.

Thats when the music critics and some fans  were saying that Janet should go more of the Madonna route and drop an album like COADF. Those 20 YO articles were full of shade and were praising Madonna. My my how soon they forget and how the tables have turned. I cringed when that man said that if Madonna is in the Hall of Fame, so should Janet. Thats not making a case for Janet at all. I still believe that she doesnt care, but if we see alot more from her in the next couple of months then i know she does.
