It could have sold more had they been promoting it instead of letting the "hype" and their names lead the way.

Stupid.

It was only released on iTunes for a week, and Best Buy since Friday, so that's a decent number. Although they were initially predicting 500k. :umm:

So did Billboard count the albums that were "sold" when folks purchased tickets to their concerts or not?

Soundscan only counts albums that are sold at retailers.

:umm: @ those sales considering they're two of the biggest names in hip-hop and their albums didn't leak. :umm:

That's what I thought, but here's a blurb from HITS:

THRONE WATCHING: Jay-Z and Kanye West's Roc-a-Fella/Roc Nation album Watch the Throne broke the U.S. iTunes one-week sales record with nearly 290k downloads through Sunday night (8/14). The set was exclusively available at the Apple store from Aug. 8-11 before going on sale at digital and physical retailers Friday (8/12). The previous one-week iTunes record was set by Coldplay's 2008 album Viva La Vida, which moved 282k in its first week, and a total of 288k from all other digital retailers. With physical sales falling off over the weekend, Watch the Throne will debut at #1 tomorrow with 425k, which is less than had been predicted. Fully 75% of the total sales will be digital, including Ticketmaster, which is offering the option of a digital copy with every ticket purchased for the upcoming tour. (8/15p)

It really wasn't an option. They purchased the digital album when they purchased the tickets.

so, another 'fake' total? as in... sales would have been a lot less if it wasn't for this 'deal'?

Yeah. We talked about it some weeks ago and I posted a printscreen of it from Ticketmaster. Instead of having the option to purchase the album or not, the album was included in every online ticket purchase even if someone didn't want it.

Hmm... if 290K was from iTunes, that's under 70% of the total sales, so the 5-7% or so of the remaining digital sales must be the Ticketmaster sales, since it was supposed to be a digital exclusive for iTunes only.

Not sure...they might just be saying that 290K was just from iTunes, but I think it was for the tour. They've been adding more dates since the shows were selling.

I know they're saying 290k was from iTunes. But they also said 75% of total sales will be digital. So there's 5-7% of digital sales that aren't from iTunes, since 290k is not 75% of the total sales. Unless they got the percentage wrong...

So did they find a way to add those Ticketmaster sales to their total? :umm: If so, we should alert Janhova's team. :umm:

I don't understand how they were able to. I thought they stopped artists from doing that after Prince and a couple of others did it years ago to keep their album sales high.
