The Lately Bass

Oh, well, at least this is my theory. Behind it all. If you want to know it. In 1986, Janet Jackson’s top mega sellin’ album Control was released. It had a whole bunch of hit songs. One of these was “What Have You Done For Me Lately”. A hot track on any dancefloor from Hungary to Russia, from Japan to Canada, from Los Angeles to Stockholm. Everyone got to know that bassline. So, when Yamaha worked on their new multi-timbral synth module, they looked out a bit for cool and new sounds. They had the “Solid Bass” patch; it would fit just fine. But why not alter it a bit, add a bit of velocity reception to it and, yeah, that’d be nice. And playing the bassline from Janet’s song worked just fine as well. It sounded a little bit like on the record. Bang! “Lately Bass” was born.

One preset of the TX81Z made history: the C15 Lately Bass starred in hundreds of dance hits in the late eighties/ early nineties: from Madonna’s ‘Vogue’ to Ace of Base’s ‘All That She Wants.’ This sound was inspired by the bass in Janet Jackson’s song ‘What Have You Done for Me LATELY.’
