I think we pay higher taxes over here but everyone gets completely free healthcare (and a legal requirement of a minimum of four weeks paid annual leave plus the 7 public holidays). In fact the specialist intensive care units etc are only available under free care. You can get private healthcare but it just means you get a pretty room but if anything serious goes wrong you will get sent to a public hospital anyway. The real big thing here is people who have pre existing conditions cannot be turned away from health insurance, the folks that need it the most. So if I have fucking cancer and I need chemotherapy for however long my insurance pays. You realize how many people die because insurance companies deny claims to those that are basically a guaranteed pay out? Insurance works basically by how many people pay in but DON'T RECEIVE SHIT IN RETURN. This makes people who can afford to pay into the system pay into it. Hospitals can write off a lot of things, I had a case where I was on government insurance and 80% of the bill was dismissed.
