But was there much to talk about at that time? There wasn't any media hype that critics could have talked about at the time. After the whole fiasco in the mid 80s, MJ's life became a tabloid story, and his music took the back seat. That's just the way it has been for some time. Most of the reviews from Metacritic didn't focus entirely on his life, some actually critiqued the music.

I can't really describe it, but it was around that time that every article on Mike became very bias. They were vicious to him.

I don't deny the fact that in the media his life became a tabloid story, I agree with that. I'm merely saying if you're going to review the music, then do so...and most didn't.

I mean, if you spend 50% of the article discussing his life/image, and then the other trashing the album (again, full of snide remarks about the man/image) Is that truly a music review?

Yes, the critics dragged Mike at that time, but it doesn't really say anything if the critic in question has spent the majority of the review making snide remarks about the man.

I don't think most truly listened tho. If you're spending most of the album creeped out because Michael Jackson sung about sex/an intimate relationship, how are you truly critiquing the music?

Don't me wrong, I agree that Vince wasn't great and some things definitely should have been cut, but I just don't see how you can give an honest review if you are listening "dispassionately" or spend most of the album "creeped out".

And I agree. But it is what it is. -_- Nevertheless, the album is still pretty decent. Just not great.
