Nicki Minaj Talks Sophomore Jinx, New Collaborations & Mixing Genres

Nicki Minaj returned home to New York to kick off her album release week. On Monday, she taped her episode of “106 & Park” with 2 Chainz and Cam’ron, received a plaque from Birdman, and stopped by DJ Clue’s show on Power 105.1, where she spoke about the sophomore jinx, mixing pop with hip-hop on her sophomore album, collaborating with Nas, her Pepsi deal, upcoming features for Cam’ron and Waka Flocka Flame, and more.

On M.I.A. and the Super Bowl incident: “I love M.I.A. She’s cuckoo sometimes, but I love her.”

On whether she believes in the sophomore jinx: “Hell no! This album is gonna sell so much more than Pink Friday. Ask me this question two years from today, Clue. With me, I’m never about first week and all that. I like to look at it for the long haul. I’ma travel, I’ma meet my beautiful babies, my Barbz everywhere, and this is my first time I’m gonna get to do a world tour, so the album is gonna do its thang.”

On mixing pop, R&B, and hip-hop on Roman Reloaded: “When I first got in the studio, it was just gonna be all rap, that’s why I named it Roman Reloaded. Things just don’t keep my attention long enough to only do one thing. By the time the album was done, it was just a versatile album. But I have to say, I feel like people love saying the pop word first. The album is more hip-hop than pop.”

On working with Nas on “Champion”: “I didn’t think I could get Nas, just to be honest. He’s always been so exclusive. He doesn’t work with everybody and I respect people that are like that. They take pride in their craft.”

On her Pepsi deal: “I can’t comment on any Pepsi-related stuff. I do have a new relationship with Pepsi and they will tell everyone more at the right time.”

On her upcoming collaborations: “I may have a little something something coming out with [Cam'ron]. I may have a little something something coming with Waka Flocka, my little brother. I do have a few more verses to hand in and then we got to hit the world a couple times.”

On her favorite songs to record: “I had a blast recording a lot of my dance songs, ‘Pound the Alarm’ and ‘Starships.’ Those were a lot of fun. I had fun recording ‘Come on a Cone.’ I was busting out laughing in the booth. When I said, ‘Dick in your face,’ that was in one take. And I also had fun doing ‘Beez in the Trap’ ’cause I made that hook up trying to be funny.”

Nicki Minaj Named "Most Influential Rap Artist Of All Time" By The New York Times

Chart topping hip hop artist Nicki Minaj has been named “the most influential rap artist of all time” by Jon Caramanica of The New York Times. As a Young Money Entertainment delight, the twenty nine year Trinidadian born American recording artist landed in the music scene during August 2009. In the days since, Minaj has turned heads, dropped jaws, and claimed her place at the top of Billboard charts with hit singles like “Super Bass,” “Your Love,” and several collaborations with the industry’s best, including L’il Wayne, Kanye West, and Drake.

The Times praise of Minaj’s work as a forerunner for female rappers included: “She became a nimble, evocative rapper. She became an intricate lyricist. She became a thoughtful singer. She became a risky performer. She invented new personae. More than any other rapper in the mainstream, she pushed hard against expectations, and won.”

The article and acclaim will certainly pave the way for Minaj’s second album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, set for release on April 3, 2012.

NICKI RELOADED AT #1

April 4, 2012

The N.Y. Times just called her the pre-eminent female rapper of all time. And while that doesn’t say much—though supporters of Lil’ Kim, MC Lyte, Foxy Brown and Missy Elliott might disagree—Nicki Minaj’s sophomore Young Money/Cash Money/ Universal Republic album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, will debut at #1 next week, with between 200-225k in sales.

That’s based on one-day reports from our crack network of online retailers and those selling CDs from the back of their car trunks.

Big Machine country stalwarts Rascal Flatts’ Changed is on target for sales between 100-125k The band’s last album, 2010’s Nothing Like This, racked up 160k in first-week numbers on the way to 1.1 million total.

Verity gospel star Marvin Sapp’s I Win looks to be in the 45-50k range. His last album, 2010’s Here I Am, peaked at #2 on the sales chart.

Universal Republic’s latest discovery, Of Monsters & Men, dubbed “the Icelandic Mumford & Sons,” will earn a very nifty 40-45k for its debut, My Head is an Animal, and its PoMo/Triple A comer, “Little Talks,” spinning at influential L.A. station KROQ, among others, with one million plays on VEVO. The band will play KROQ’s 20th annual Weenie Roast Y Fiesta at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine, CA, May 5.

Not terrible, but it could've been bigger.

how ,much is madonna selling..if less that 100k a disgrace

Not sure.

But if "almost half" of the first week total came from the Ticketmaster bundle, then only about 179k was through regular sales. And most albums decrease by at least 50% during the second week. So if that's the case, her second week sales could be shit. Adele will probably outsell it.

It really is. <_<

And he didn't sell out to get some hits :) Want to act like a regurgitated generic pop star, sell like a regurgitated generic pop star

The metacritics score is amazing

That's what the album feels like to me. The first half is great. A little off the wall but it's creative and true to the Nicki blueprint. The dance tracks all lumped together in the middle are just too obvious. Granted I like a couple, but I feel like they'll be extremely dated in no time.

I met yesterday her, She is so adorable. This album is EVERYTHING. #TeamMinaj

Aww, did you get a chance to speak to her? :w00t:

Speaking of Metacritic...

PF:RR is scoring a 54/100 right now.

It's like, when she had a feeling the whole "Roman" thing wasn't going to appeal to the masses, she delayed the release, went back to the studio, recorded a bunch of dance/pop tracks, and didn't bother to even revise the tracklist.

Nicki Minaj has everyone buzzing about the fantASStic video for “Beez in the Trap,” the latest single off her album Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, which is expected to debut at No. 1 next week. Shot in Miami, the dirty version of the Benny Boom-directed clip co-stars rapper-of-the-moment 2 Chainz and “a lot of big booty girls.” Watch Nicki flaunt her assets below.
