Open Letter: What Really Happened to Me at the BET Awards

Posted by: B. ScottJuly 1, 2013

BScott_Before_After_BET-Awards_2013-583x600.jpg

Approved outfit selections as submitted to BET prior to the show.

BET reached out to me to be the Style Stage Correspondent for the 2013 BET Awards 106 and Park Pre-Show. I’ve previously appeared on BET’s 106 and Park twice. On both occasions, there was never an issue with my appearance or how I chose to express myself. Ever.

The powers at be for this show wanted “B. Scott”…but not really. From the beginning, I wanted to make this work. I even tried to secure Chris Brown’s stylist to help me in putting together an appropriate ensemble. Unfortunately BET couldn’t afford him and instead sent over their own stylists to work with me.

After a few weeks of sending over mood boards and going over approved looks, we decided on a few options. All of which were generally more masculine than what I would wear if I were able to decide on my own. Blazers, long sleeved dress shirts, black pants, loafers.

We didn’t know at the time that Los Angeles would be in the middle of a record heat wave, and the options we selected just weren’t weather appropriate. The day before the show I spoke with BET’s style team and we agreed that it was okay to have a more weather appropriate ensemble option.

Not only was it agreed upon among the stylists, I met with a producer of the show the night before and showed her the ensemble. She said it was acceptable and requested I send over a picture so that she could forward it to whomever she needed to. The picture of the complete outfit was sent over and everything was fine. At all points during this process, everything I was going to wear or considering wearing was both discussed and approved. According to BET, everything had to be approved because I was hosting sponsored segments and the sponsors needed to be comfortable.

The morning of the show I arrived on set at 10am for rehearsals. During rehearsals I sent the new outfit over to wardrobe to be steamed. Everybody involved in the process knew what I was wearing and began preparing the pieces accordingly.

As I was getting ready (hair, makeup, wardrobe), various members of the production team were in and out of my trailer making sure I had everything I needed. A producer visited my trailer as I was getting my makeup done. Another producer was there when I was getting my hair straightened. They were even there outside waiting as I was putting on the finishing touches of my outfit.

After rushing to make it to the red carpet in time, I was escorted by several members of production down to the stage. Everybody I spoke with commented on how fabulous I looked. There was never any indication that there was an issue. There was no pushback. I was simply there to do my job.

After interviewing AJ Calloway for my first segment I was literally yanked backstage and told that my look from head to toe “wasn’t acceptable.”

They asked me to pull my hair back, they asked me to change my attire.

Let’s be clear, I wasn’t wearing a ball gown and stiletto heels. I was wearing long pants, and a long shirt.

I was returned to my trailer and forced to change into one of the other outfits while other producers waited outside. I changed quickly and returned to set, only to be told that I had been replaced by Adrienne Bailon and wouldn’t be going on at all.

I was hurt. I am hurt.

A consultant from Procter & Gamble (the company who sponsored the BET Style Stage) watched the entire incident play out. She came over and offered her words of support and encouragement. Her words, ‘We at Procter & Gamble support you and we do not agree with what BET is doing to you’ were extremely comforting. She also explained to me that someone made the call to have me pulled, and that it was the wrong call.

After all, the sponsor approved B. Scott and were expecting B. Scott from the beginning.

I’m not sure what happened, but there were some internal phone calls made and as a result I was added back to the show.

I feel as though at the last minute that someone at BET wasn’t comfortable with someone like me.

It’s not just about the fact that BET forced me to pull my hair back, asked me to take off my makeup, made me changed my clothes and prevented me from wearing a heel. It’s more so that from the mentality and environment created by BET made me feel less than and that something was wrong with who I am as a person.

I want to thank everybody at BET who supported me and fought for me to be on this red carpet.

Thank you to all of my love muffins who have shown support in various ways.

I initially didn’t want to talk about this situation because I was truly embarrassed. But, I feel that it’s important to know that no matter how you choose to express yourself, it is okay to be who you are.

TL:DR version: Basically, he seeked approval for his outfit in advance, but at the last minute somebody had a problem with it and forced him to change.

I always hate how society tries to force everyone into a "box." I support him wearing whatever he wants.

He was hired, paid, and signed a contract... He isn't the boss of BET or anyone running the production of BET...

I side with the employer... It's apart of the job... quit crying and just do your job

Don't care about "personal artistry" or some other hippie BS about B Scott.. he signed onto the job... Just do it without going all "diva"

It's not that serious

I read the whole thing, this is about Black homophobia, they wanted a watered down B. Scott, someone they can be gay but give us the gay we used to, DL bruthas. Chile please BET isn't exactly the most prestigious gig anyone gets anyway, they should have let him do him knowing him, if you can't take him as he is then don't fuck with him. Im so pissed at Game and his shit, Im so over that, its all good for the "company" to flip the script last second when someone gets a little "uncomfortable" and as an employee you're supposed to just go along with the bull? I don't think so they gave that man approval before hand and some narrow minded idiot said some shit because they weren't comfortable with their own sexuality and pulled the plug on B. Scott. This is wrong and anytime we as gay Black men approve of any one of us getting fucked over that means the shit can happen to you too. Someone has to speak up and call a spade a spade. I dont watch BET anymore anyway and its not about self hatred its about shitty television :filenails:

Yes.. Your employees can send you home if you dress like a fool :umm:

He can dress like that anytime he feels but when he's at work, look presentable.. And America knows B Scott is gay.. Nothing dL about him.. All he had to do is stand in some expensive suit for 40 minutes.. Lets quit acting like his rights are being infringed upon.. They're not.. Costume changes happen all the time. B. Scott isn't the first person to be subject to a wardrobe change and he won't be the last.. Plus the outfit looked LOGO when he's a BET present.. Image is everything. They still placed his ass on the air didn't they? Then what's the big deal.. An obvious gay black man was on BET.. Isn't that enough? But nope.. He's gotta look the "part" of flamboyant stereotypical gay too I guess..

first of all B Scott is an entertainer/personality not a fucking suit for IBM

Second of all they didn't simply request him to change from anything any less appropriate than some of the actual televised performances showed

Third of all its not as simple as go from a blue suit to a gray one, they asked this human being to compromise who they are ...and that's wrong he should have been allowed to wear what he already had approved, point blank someone saw him and they had issues and tried to flip the script

1) Much like professional sport athletes, wear a suit.. It's their show.. Not his.. He signed his life away.. He can deal with it.. I'm sure he didn't bitch when he cashed their check

2) that's subjective.. Many people enjoyed the performances (except for MC's)..

3) yeah.. God forbid he wear clothing that doesn't resemble an outfit from Forever 21.. Stop.. You are being too flamboyant with your responses.. Like they embarrassed him... There is nothing wrong with that suit...

4) i reiterate which most of you ignore for some reason.. He signed a contract... And now he's crying bc he didn't have creative control? Psh

from what i read he was given the okay on several occassions and went on to further explain specifically that his outfits were not some big surprise but rather pre-approved, contract or not the issue came in when "someone" had a damn problem with a feminine gay Black male in the room. They decided to pull him, which could be a violation of said contract, then proceeded to put him on wearing something he himself did not approve of. It's not like they asked him to choose something he was comfortable with they dressed him in something they were comfortable with, damn B Scott and what he thought, just put this on and get up there in this suit, completely compromising what his brand is and what is does arguably it could be said B Scott would have axed the gig altogether if he knew they would act so BET :filenails: and let's not play the man on no damn checks anyway, he been an internet sensation before this and this only helps to get him exposure...especially in light of the gay rights movement victory just last week. Point is let muthafuckas be them, if you can't deal don't but change me to fit you? GTFO

I don't see how they can ask for B. Scott to do the show, but he has to change everything about himself in order to do it. BET has every right to ask him to change his outfit, but that's not the point...The B Scott brand is very specific...he is known for his fabulousity flamboyant unapologetic style and what BET ('Black' Entertainment Television) did was they wanted to make him more masculine and he is not comfortable in that role and that is not what he is about. It shouldn't be a big deal, but it leaves a bad taste in my mouth knowing that these people were probably black Christians feeling some type of way with B Scott being on television looking all girly and influencing the youth...'oh know we cant have that' but ITS OKAY for these male rappers to sag their pants, mistreat women and promote violence against their own people. DA FUQ!

And from what I know, BET has the final say in what their presenters are wearing... And B Scott signed the dotted line & cashed that check..

I doubt BET's contract states that the entertainer or "personality" has creative control on THEIR show... if it does, than BET needs to hire a new lawyer... Every outfit has an alternative.

BET has to appeal to their consumers.. and their consumers aren't the same as Rupaul's (I love me some Ru)

BET has president over their employees.... End of story

They wanted him to appear less like a man dressed like a woman and more like a man... At the same time broaden their demographic to the gay youth... These same people hired him :umm: so you can't really play the "black Christian judgmental" card but nice reach

And comparing a wardrobe change to rappers being violent... I guess video games kill people too..

I applaud BET's change bc 1) I don't care for bloggers and talentless diva personalities 2), they have an image to upkeep, 3) I don't like human beings that cry over petty materialistic things and 4) Mr. Scott cashed that check

2) And what image of theirs is so important and clean that B. Scott's flamboyance is in any way a threat or disgrace to it?

3) They made him change at the very last minute when everyone important knew what he would be wearing. No-one said he was "crying" except you but that's expected. He had a right to be upset after going through all of that and then not to even be allowed back on and be replaced.

4) To hell with a check. Everyone has the right to speak their mind about something wrong that happened to them regardless of being paid or not. Wrong is wrong.

Preach! Megan Good can have her titties all out presenting a gospel award and all these rappers can sag/cuss/act a mess but B. Scott can't wear heels. Ain't nobody got time for that.

And that's exactly why he asked for their approval in advance. It seems someone lower down in the ranks didn't get the memo.

2) Every company has a brand... Their brand is what keeps people watching... in their case, black people... there's a difference between flamboyant in a woman's outfit.. and flamboyant looking like a million dollars... He could have had kept his personality in a suit...

3) Bc people want to feel sorry for him.. Talk about playing the victim and trust me... I know a little about that... so I don't feel sorry for him.. This "open-letter" was unprofessional and cried "GIVE ME ATTENTION".. He could have handled this better... Privately.. not try to make BET seem homophobic

4) In this case.. it wasn't personal.. just business..

BET knew who he was and how he dressed before they signed him on. What's the point of having him on if he has to be someone he's not?

To be a man in a suit asking questions - that's his job.. Have you seen an award show where the interviewer isn't wearing a suit?

And again, BET has creative control.. Not some blogger.. BET has a brand and it's not RuPaul's so BET made him dress accordingly

Big whoop.. They hired him for his personality.. Bc that's what he is.. A "personality" and just like Kim Kar' or any other personality, they don't have creative control especially over the mainstream "black" media. They did NOT hired him for his clothes and the other baggage..

I just think it's ungrateful to be bitter bc he didn't get his way. He was given an opportunity... And this is how he reacts to a little change? Put your ego aside and do your job sir

Game we all know that BET hired him to do a job.. B and BET agreed on an outfit that was suitable for the show.. They made him change his outfit right before air time.. If that was such an issue, they never should have invited him.. He's been on BET before and they didn't have an issue with how he dressed. This is just an award show were you are bound to see tits, ass, cursing and a fight or two..Let's not talk about the drunks.. This was the BET Awards not Gospel of Celebration..

BET looks like the fool because every other show he's been on, they let him be himself..
